Default Sea Trout Flies

Hi everyone,
Apologies in advance for bringing up what is probably an old and well worn subject, but my searches were a little in vain.
I'm having my first night session fishing for sea trout next week (Woodmill pool) and wondered; if I just purchased 5 or 6 flies for the session, what should I be going for?
I've been looking at some snakes from The Essential Fly and a starter pack from First Tackle (I think it's a Fulling mill pack).
Any ideas and pointers will be very gratefully received.
Regards,
Del.

Hi Del,

Don't get too hung up on fly patterns. I may be wrong (I'm not a fish!), but at night time I think colour is irrelavent, however a bit of flash that picks up any avaible light may have an influence.

Black and silver snakes, tubes and singles in a vairiety of sizes (although I'm not sure how important size is either) will be fine. IMHO concentrating on putting them in the right place, at the right depth and at the right speed is the key.

To answer your question more specifically though, I'm sure the snakes and starter pack will do the job fine!

Best

Jon

Cheers Jon. Sound advice for any form of fly fishing I reckon.
Thanks for your time,
Del.

stick with singles or small doubles to start with they are much easier to cast with in the dark untill you get used to the feel of the rod in total darknes ,just my thoughts

Woodmill pool needs big flies and sinking lines in general.

If I was paying £220 to night-fish a tricky tidal pool I'd have checked on flies and tactics first. You will need a fastish sinking line, or long sink tip, for when the tide flows, perhaps also a lighter floating outfit, if the Sportfish report is anything to go by: The Urban Double

I would ask Sportfish to supply a few of their patterns for both methods. BTW - looks a great venue.

Many thanks ST7, Speycaster and Ephemerella. All your advice taken on board and will be used.
Yeah, pretty expensive, but I'm kind of hoping it's a 'captive audience' and I'll have a chance of catching one or two (we are 3 rods for the night).
Once again, many thanks for your time and help,
Del.
