Default What hooks

Was intending to only fish for trout in the river this year but fancy buying the odd day licence and having a go for sewin. Was going to tie a few basic patterns like silver stoats tails but what make/model hook and size should I get? The river I intend to fish is the Tawe.

Default Re: What hooks

Hi WO, good luck with the Tawe sewin. I use a variety of hooks, Kamasan B175 size 8 for trad wet patterns, Partridge YD4A for longer lures, they have a long shank and a good gape.

Try some aluminium tube flies with a single carp hook rather than a treble, makes night fishing a lot less fraught.

Salars look great with silver an blue patterns in fact they look great for all patterns, not a very heavy hook though. Same goes for the Wilson code 1's, nice looking hook but light.

Heavy salmon hooks are good for larger patterns but a tube fly will do the biz.

Some of the sea hooks look good too, John Gray (now departed from the forum alas) reccommends Partridge Saltwater Perfect in a size 8, yet to buy any but he does know his sea trout -

Mc Hardys and Flymakers are good suppliers.

After that black, blue and natural squirrel tails, red and blue hackle and some black and red thread should set you up for the rapidly disappearing season!

Thanks Diawl Bach, I'd better get a move on then and tie some up. Thanks for all the info.
