Default Attach snake flies to tippet?

Hi All
Having never used snake flies before for fishing for sea trout or salmon, what is the best method of attaching these to the tippet?

Is it the usual 5 turned blood knot?

Also, while I am asking, are these flies very effective for fishing for sea trout?
(I fish the Nith)

Is it easy to get them to sink with a sinking leader/line etc?

Thanks in advance for the answers people.

cheers
rusty

There are much better knots than the blood knot such as the improved Turtle knot.

Snake flies are deadly for sea trout.

They sink easily when fished with a leader on a floating line. they can also be fished on an intermediate or sinking line.

My advice is to try as many knots as possible with your tippet material with as many variations (i.e. two, three, four, five, six turn) and test them to destruction against a spring balance until you identify what's best.

For me, it is a Pitzen knot (or 16-20 knot) with 5 or 6 turns when using either Fulling Mill or Ultima Power Match copolymer.

Yes 'snakes' are sometimes deadly for sea trout. I wouldn't use a 'turle' knot though; I keep that for tiny Icelandic trebles to fluorocarbon, and up-eyed dry flies.

For tying on to snakes such as Dai's excellent examples below I'd use 15 lb fluoro and a 'Rapala Loop'.

tend to agree gives the fly more freedom to move and makes all the difference in how the fish sees it

Rapala Knot is a good'un although I have snake flies which are from the James Waltham style patterns.I use a uni-knot and once pulled up I ease the knot away from the hook eye only just enough to give it some freedom.Soon comes tight when a sea trout takes it.I have used it this way for years on various sea trout/sewin flies using various tippet although mostly 10lb Maxima.
