Default Hooks, doubles and trbles

Never having went out fishing mainly for sea trout, lately I have been looking at flies patterns for sea trout. I don't want to cause any offence to anyone who specially goes out fishing for sea trout but I notice a lot of S T patterns consist of double hooks or a single hook with a treble hanging below it, are these really neccessary ?

What kind of mess would these doubles or trebles make to a fishes mouth or throat if a fish needs returning to the water? Would a single hook not suffice.

two singles would do the job. i think if your going to keep one for the pot then the trailing double or single [the stinger] wouldnt be too bad

Hi Guys,
Sea trout are notorious for 'coming short' at the fly just nipping the tail without hooking up.The 'Trailing treble' flies ie: Secret weapons were designed to increase the chances of a hook up when the trout are less confident of a solid take or simply nipping away at the fly's tail.
If you are in any doubt to the mess these hooks make in the fish's mouth ..fish barbless or crush the barbs on the fly. Most trout will be lip/scissor hooked and damage minimal.
As speycaster points out singles probably do the job just as well...Falkus's famous 'Sunk Lure' has accounted for many quality fish and is a Tandem tied fly-the rear hook a single.
