Default Sea Trout To 26lb... Just Another Action Packed Week At Our Lodges In Argentina

We recived some fishing reports from our lodges in Argentina, and its been another action packed week!

Here's some pictures and a report from the Kau Taupen Lodge!

Click here to view more details on it!

This tenth week at Kau Tapen we welcomed a group composed of 2 anglers from UK, 2 from Australia, 3 from Canada, and 4 from U.S.A.

All of them got along very well and enjoyed the fact that they were all from so many different nationalities, sharing experiences, knowledge and stories.

We started the week with very low and clear water, which demanded fine presentation, long leaders, and small flies. It was quite challenging as the fish were spooky due to the low water in the pools and the almost non existent wind. The softer the landing of the fly and the presentation, the more chances we had to get a fish. Despite these challenging conditions, we had some great fishing opportunities and most of our guests did really well and caught a good number of nice fish.

In these conditions we were fishing floating line with intermediate to fast sinking polyleader with nymph, and rubber legs. We found it very effective to cover water and find the fish on the take. Most of the fish are coloured now as the fall and the spawning are coming soon, but we got as well some very nice fresh fish coming up river.

In the middle of the week, heavy rain fell both in the river and up in the mountains. As a consequence, on Tuesday mid afternoon, the water started to rise and it turned coloured. We kept fishing but then the river started carrying too many leaves making the fly hook dirt during the drift. On Wednesday morning the water was already very dirty and much higher in both the Menendez and the Rio Grande, so we decided to give it a try. However, it was too difficult as the visibility was close to cero.

The next day, the water started to drop and clear little by little and we got the chance to catch some nice fish but then the water rose again and got more coloured, which made the following 2 days very tough to fish.

During those days in which the water was dirty and high, we took the opportunity to teach our clients new tricks and to give them some casting tuitions that would make them improve their casting. They were all very happy and receptive. Then Pelle, our guide, tied some flies for them. It was a great chance to get guides and clients talk and share experiences.

At the end of the week, when we were enjoying the tapas night, two of our guests gave a very nice speech about their experience in the Rio Grande. They were very thankful to the guide’s team for the effort done to put our guests on to fish and also for teaching them casting techniques and helping them improve their skills.

It was on the last day, when the water had already cleared and the fishing improved, that William D. landed the biggest fish of the week: a beautiful 22 pounder, pretty fresh sea trout that showed great fighting skills! It was caught on a black and chartreuse leech presented on a Sinking 4 shooting head!

We had full moon on Saturday March 19th and it was one of the highest tides in the last 18 years, which will bring a good amount of fresh fish into the river and with the water level we have now, they will be up here very soon!

We are looking forward to have you here at Kau Tapen.

Cheers,

By Jean Baptiste Vidal Fishing Manager Kau Tapen lodge.

This is the report from our second lodge... Villa Maria!

This week we had a cosmopolitan group at Villa Maria, 7 guests from all over the world: Timo, Mike and Hans from Sweden, John and Peter from UK, Pat from Australia and Karl from Germany. They got along very well despite their different nationalities and they had a great time during their stay at the lodge. They enjoyed our excellent food, service and hospitality.

The fishing was very good during the first 4 days of the week. Unfortunately the river rose and got muddy during Wednesday night and the last 2 days we were unable to fish. The weather was very nice, sunny and not too windy. And the river was very low and clear at the beginning of the week. We caught 52 fish and hooked 64. The average fish p/day p/person was 1,9. This ratio was better than last week and also better than same week last year. The average weight was also better with 11 pounds for the week. Although we are still catching silver and fresh fish, we started to catch more colored fish which means that the fall is coming and the fish are preparing to spawn.

A special mention to Pat B. (81 years old), who caught the biggest fish of the week, a beautiful 26 pounds fresh and fat hen seatrout. It was the biggest fish he had ever caught on a fly too. Congratulations Pat!

Now we have full moon, fresh water in the river and very high tides in the sea (the highest in the last 18 years), all this means that we will have a good run of fresh fish coming into the river this week!!

River Conditions: The river was very low and clear during the first part of the week. Then it rose about 12 inches and got muddy, which was very good as the river had been too low. Today, Friday 18, the river is dropping and clearing up. The water temperature was good, ranging the 9 to 11 degree Celsius.

Fishing Techniques and flies: We fished with Skaggit lines with type 3 and type 8 tips, fishing the traditional swing. In what comes to flies, we used mostly small rubber legs, green machines, small nymphs, tube flies and leeches late in the evening. We also used different sort of tubes flies.

Fish:

We caught 52 fish and hooked 64 during the week.

Average fish per rod: 1,9 fish p/rod p/day.

The average weight was 11 pounds.

We caught 6 fish over 15 lbs and 8 fish over 20 lbs during the week.

Biggest fish of the week was 26 pounder caught by Pat Butler.

Last one! This time its the Bella Vista Lodge!

For more information click here!

New friends from Australia visited us last week. They shared the fishing with Nicolas from Argentina. They were all young and eager to learn the technique of Spey Casting.

We started last week with good wind conditions and water levels 8 inches below the normal. The water has been very clear and we had nice surprises on the first day of fishing.

We had good fishing during some days of the week and during some others it was a bit slow. However, we were able to catch sea trout and resident trout every day, which kept us alert and full of action.

We continue with the mood of the fish being totally unpredictable, like the previous week, which is why we had to vary between floating and intermediate lines and flies of different patterns. During the week the river rose only two inches, not allowing movement of fish between the pools and the entry of fresh fish.

In general terms, the river has been very low and clear, but thanks to the drop in temperature, we had moments of action in the main river. We hooked a total of 13 sea trout between 3 anglers, but we only landed 9. The biggest fish of the week was a 17 pounder and the average weight was 10,4 lbs. We also caught 55 resident brown trout between 3 to 5 pounds in the main river.

The good news is that we finally have rain in the mountains, promising major changes in the fishing next week. We are starting to see many fish moving and the coming climate changes will no doubt improve the fishing.

Tight lines!!!!

Provided by Gaston Guglielminetti

River Conditions: The water level was 10 inches below the normal level and dropping slowly every day.

Water temperature: between 4ēC and 17 ēC.

Water clarity: Very Clear .

Fishing Conditions: Fishing was tough some days, and good other due to climate changes. We caught very nice fish and we ended with an average weight of 10,4 lbs. We caught 9 sea trout and we lost 4 and we also caught lot of resident browns in the main river (55 fish)

Fly lines used: We used only floating lines (AFS lines and Skagit Heads) with intermediate tips, floating tips and sometimes and long leader

Fishing Techniques: The water was flowing enough that simply jigging or stripping the line slowly imparted plenty of action.

Flies Used: We use different nymphs with rubber legs during the day and Small streamers at sunset. Best flies this week were EMB, ***** Creek, Green Machine

Conditions of the fish: Most of the fish this week were either turning or dark.

Must get there one day, and wet a line.

Some stunning fish, a mate was out there in Feb, and had 55 fish in a week best 22lb 08oz. 30 fish over 10lb must have been the flies i tied up for him that did the trick

Dai.
