No chance, the boys who know where the sea trout live in Strangford are tighter than a duck's ar*e. Their reasoning being that they took years to find 'em so they ain't about to let you in on it either

Best advice is to get out there and nosey about. Marlfield, Salt Water Brig, Gibb's Island and below the town of Portaferry might be rough geographical areas to start. I've said too much already, I'll be lynched next season

Talking

You dont have to be Einstein to find sea trout just look for good areas where you can wade out to.Sandy bottoms, leapard leaves, even better if you can come out in a floating ringand a goog selection of flies

Default Sea Trout Strangford

There are dozens of good spots depending on the time of year. Early season you will get seat trout in the lower end of the lake. Try marlfield bay and the bay around the corner towards ballyhenry lighthouse. Also south of Portaferry at the Nursing Home near barhall.
On the opposite shore try all around the shore at Delamont and in towards the barrier.

By June they are well spread but the real hotspot is at the Dorn or Castle hill. This is so good the locals prevent you from parking anywhere near it. . The location is a few miles south of Kirkcubbin. There is a road to the left signposted for Portavogie and Cloughy. The entrance is an Iron gate opposite this. This is a right of way and do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Follow the path right to where the bay drains into the main lough. There is the ruin of an old church on the hillside. This is a unique area and on a dropping tide creates a run that the trout lie in. It is a great spot but beware the locals who feel they own it and can be at best unfriendly.

In addition the little river (Blackwater) that drains inot the lough below Kircubbin can be good on a flood and is worth a throw and fish it right down to the lough. Fish do hang around especially later in the season.

On the opposite shore seat tout can be found in any of the spots where the tide creates a flow, around Ardmillan etc. I heard island hill and have seen trout but these are so many mullet it is impossible to fish properly.

Either will do. Try a range of flies. mainly flashy types. I would fish a clear intermediate line. I usually try an elver fly or butcher variants, teal, blue and silver etc. To be honest most people fishe either a silver spinner lure or a baot fish with sand eels.

By July fishing the fly you can have goos sport with the mackeral and small pollack and coalies. The Coalies fight as well as sea trout on light tackle.

Default Re: Sea trout fishing on strangford lough

Went today & tried the area around Kircubbin,

4 casts & was into a sea trout of around 2lb mark, on a variant of the Bloody Butcher. Broke free from the hook in 18 ins of water so I replaced with a "wee double" of the same fly. Several recasts in less than 2ft water.....

Tonight I have a plate with a nice table sized seatrout, barbecued along with some Horse Island area Cockles.

Absolute decadence. Thanks for the advice.
