Default Fishing a clear(ish) Tidal River

In Scotland I am able to fish a river which has a run of sea trout and with the occasional salmon.
My problem is that when the tide is low, the water can get very clear and the fish can see you miles away. There are a couple of pools which are 4-5feet deep and the others are less when the tide is fully out.
The last time I fished it, it was in September where I caught two 12" fish. On another day I saw a fish of 3-4lb follow my spinner all the way into the bank and turned at the last minute without taking.

I only catch sea trout on spinner as the like something going past them quickly. But it would be good if I can persuade them to take a wet fly.

I would like some ideas/advice on the flies I could entice them with.

Would blue or white flies suffice?

I have been looking at three books and I found this fly which is suppose to be for sea trout. Just tied two of them. They are called Arctic Ally's. The book says there was an article in the 1997 Trout & Salmon magazine for them.

I won't be fishing at night. But I will be fishing for them in the evenings and any time during the day. It depends on access to the river because it can be difficult to get to with the tide is high. And there's also a bog/ditch where I get to the river.

try something like this
Click the image to open in full size.

They seem to like the movement of the tail. we dont use flying trebles on our river but one would prevent "tail nip" if required.
As Jim says clear water is a sure sign of fishing at dark 'o clock time,In fact i just dont bother during the early evening now unless i want pestered by daft wee finnock.

What river are you fishing ? There shouldn't be any seatrout in the seapools at this time of year other than finnock or returning fish. A fish of 3-4lb could be a slob................
