Default Bann estuary total disaster.

Just pulled the boat off the water today probably for the last time. What has happened to this once great seatrout estuary, silver fish could be seen in the air all the way from the barmouth to the cutts now nothing.Could count on one hand the fish i've had this year and many years previous to this.No fish cages near the estuary so can't blame lice, over fishing at sea pollution coming from lough neaghIt's no secret in northern ireland that this lough is filthy with a lot of the countrys waste flowing into it then down through the estuary to the sea.The sad thing about this is no one seems to care, goverment or politicians and the situation just gets worse year after year. You keep thinking maybe next year but it never happens so it's time to face the truth, the seatrout won't be back, sad day!

Yes Alex they still fish for eels as i see the eel man as he's called here checking the traps at the cutts for elvers. When we were young you could lift the elvers in handfuls from the traps and walls along the cutts,i don't know how many elvers he gets now but it's nowhere near the numbers there used to be.They seem to have gone like the seatrout, very few come back and you won't find any climbing the walls or handfuls in the traps. It's hard to know what to make of it all but since the mid 80's it's been downhill all the way,it's now got to the point were i don't think it's worth the effort any more.l

Sounds bad. My advice would be to write formally to the Environment & Heritage service NI - if you do this in writing they must respond. Ask what consented sewage and industrial outfalls discharge into the Lough, ask about water quality, fish populations etc

Northern Ireland Environment Agency

Then let us know their response............

The bann and lough neagh are now just total sess pits.

I pity our salmon that have to run this dump to get back up their rivers.

The bann was once steaming and I mean steaming with eels, salmon and seatrout. These days are now long gone.

When the bann is low, it is now actually green in colour.....my great grandfather used to drink out of this river when fishing. Nowadays if you even tried this, you would be hospitalised.

I have been told my a reliable source, that there are parts of lough neagh so polluted, that when you put your hands in certains pockets of water, it will literally burn your hands and bring you out in a rash.

You see all the new housing estates around castlerock around the bar mouth.....have a guess where the sewage waste goes.....only in northern ireland.
