Default Fly tying vice

I fancy a try at tying my own flies after watching a video on youtube.

Can anybody recommend a basic vice which is suitable for saltwater flies and that won't break the bank? Also, what pattern hooks/sizes and fly tying tools and materials would you recommend for a beginner?

Also wondering if the area of South Devon from Torquay through to Hallsands/Beesands is worth trying on the fly.
Obviously, i'm not looking for people to name marks, just whether the area as a whole is worth a bash.

Thanks in advance
Mark

Hi buddy.

Google in DNA live bait fly, the person who thought up the fly has done a video on how to tie the fly and hooks he uses, very simple to make and it works. He has a great little online shop too, uksaltwaterflies.com , check it out you won't go wrong. As for hooks I like size 2 long shank hooks with micro barbs. As for a vice well I bought a £15 vice a long time ago and does the job fine. Best of luck

Thanks for replies folks.

Well, I got outbid on the vice on auction on ebay and I'd actually emailed another seller on ebay yesterday about the Regent vice. So I think I shall get one of those.
Wondering, would it be best to buy a complete tool kit or just buy a few individual items, ie bobbin holder, scissors etc. to get started and build up as I progress (well, hopefully)?

I've just watched the video recommended by Simples30 and it does look like something even I could possibly achieve!!
I will have to invest in some materials methinks.

Cheers again for replies

Mark

I only started fly tying a few weeks ago for my trip to Los Roques. It is addictive!!
I bough a Regent for about £18 it is fine. I got a kit with all the tools for about £11, again fine for my purposes and cheaper than buying individually.

The materials vary in price but again with some careful selection they can be bought at a reasonable figure. Eyes can be expensive, as can good quality SS hooks.

Bury St Edmunds has a great shop which has some the best prices I've come across if you are in the East Anglia area. (but I think you might be west country)

It is great fun and I can wait to catch my fist fish on my own fly.
Good luck

a regent vice will surfice mate a full rotary will add advantages in time for turning and speed but regent are great little vices. as for torquay princess pier on small baitfish during ika (squid season) its brilliant fun using fast sinknig rio T14 and T17 heads.
Failing that anywhere along the south coast hold fish mate dont resign to bass only though pollock, coalie, wrasse, mackerel. flounder, whitting, pouting all take flies experiment a little its all good sport.
