Default rod for mullet

it was a chance remark that got me thinking about catching mullet on the fly , hence here i am ! going to kit myself out with a rod , reel ETC for mullet ; but what line weight ? i am torn between #6 AND #7 weight !!! I would prefer the #6 if it is a weight that will be most used , i prefer to fish on the lighter side !
I can see advantages in both weights but hoping you [ with more knowledge of such things ] will be able to advise
I have an almost obsessive nature in that i shant be happy till i have cracked mullet fishing . I know of several places to fish for mullet on the south west coast but if anyone is willing to take me under there wing for a session i would be most grateful I live near yeovil [ for those less well informed , its on the somerset/dorset border] and would like to be able to team up with someone if at all possible to reduce the pain of driving [ i drive for a living ] also only avable to fish friday night to sunday .

A 6 weight will throw any mullet fly that you are likely to use and it will also work for schoolie bass, gar and mackerel. A lot of the time you will be stealth fishing at very close quarters rather than flinging at the horizon, so a softer actioned rod would be good in theory. Having said that, I use a ST Croix 9 foot #6 with a WF6 and it has a pretty crisp action. The critical thing in my experience is that mullet during the day are very shy of line and leader disturbance or drag so the outfit needs to be able to turn over long leaders with long tippets well

A six weight outfit is ideal for mullet, enhancing the sport to be enjoyed with fish in the 3 to 6lb range but also capable of dealing with occasional double figure fish.
Patience, determination, observation and imagination are more important than the equipment you will use when initially chasing mullet. There is no short cut, unless an experienced muffer takes you under his pectoral fin but that would, of course, remove the challenge.
Best of luck in your quest.

both 6 or 7wt rods will serve you well mate, dependant on mark ect i use both personaly if fishing close to structure i use the 7wt open water or river i favour the 6wt.
time and frustration comes highly on the list though lol...

thank you for the replies i have settled on a seven after speaking to an orvis dealer who just so happens to fish on a stretch of coast near me for bass and mullet . i realize that a seven will be a little overkill for mullet but it will be good for the bass too , i will have to get another rod at some point but i would favour a #5 if its just for mullet in open water as a #6 would be too close to the #7 .
got a good deal on an orvis rod in the sales was going to get a cheaper rod but fell for orvis hydros 9ft #7 and will match with a 444 SL or a barrio line .
i feel like a little kid waiting for christmas at the thought of getting a line in the water probably wont be able to wait and will have to go and fish on the local reservoir when it opens , might be a good idea anyhow as i havent cast a fly for a long time !
do you think its like riding a bike once learnt never forgotten ?
have you used the barrio lines ?
does the colour of line have an influence , 2 schools of thought ...1 it will get the fish to to **** off due to panic ...2 it will not make any difference ????

I haven't used the lines myself mate, but colour wise i opt for drab colours or white by choice on floating lines and clear if fishing an intermediate but again personal choice as for colour scareing the fish?? A splashy cast will do more damage than colour in my experience. Mullet fishing at night has taken all of my best fish though i will openly admit.

are we in hibernation for the colder months or is it that you havent got the inclination to post ??? we are all waiting for the warmer sea temps and the arrival of our intended prey , no one more than me !
i am steadily building up my tackle for the onslaught of heady days catching [ or at least trying ] our chosen prey !considering my age its almost pathetic the degree of excitement i am experiencing just waiting to throw that first cast of the year . There must be others that are just twiddling their thumbs or even biting their nails waiting ,waiting ,and waiting ! so who is going to break the silence ????????????????????????????????
