Default flies with lips. plastic collars and articulated flies

Hello Chaps,

My mind has been ticking over after catching well on the komomo 11 plugs last season, sacrilege I know but I like to mix it up and don't always feel confident enough to leave the spinning rod at home.

Anyway some good may come out of this. I've been wondering if it's possible to tie flies with similar lips- perhaps plastic or otherwise? My mind had been further nudged by some of the articulated lips the soft plastic chaps have been using such as those available at Delalande Jig Head tetes plombees weight.

Imagine my thoughts when I see these large streamesrs on a US web site with some kind of popper lip or collar which is either part of the fly tying itself or pulled down over the top of the fly onve it is tied on. 15th and 16th pics down at: Yellowstoneriver.streamrefishing.march

I haven't doen much research yet but does anyone have any experience of these type of plastic collars or lips on flies. SLightly different from gurglers and poppers but hopefully making use of similar noise and water disturbance techniques. I'd hope they'd be good for bass

cheers
Will

Hope this helps your tying.

I've never tied with them, but i can imagine they not only impart noise and water disturbance, but enhance the movement of articulated flies.

You should also check out Articulated Shanks by Flymen Fishing company. Easy to add articulation points...

Magic Head I have found these give a nice lateral wiggle rather than up and down like most weighted head tyings

I tied this up last week with pike in mind

Click the image to open in full size.

I tied everything on the rear hook then once I'd trimmed it removed the bend of the hook though if you wired an articulated shank connection in you could leave to hook intact mine just runs on a basic wire loop whipped and superglued on.

I read an article of Flyfishing in saltwater where the writer was using 1/2 inch foam cylinder as the body of the fly and sculpting the lip with a razor blade. Looks easier then messing about with plastic.

Used to use the Tullis Wiggle Nymph flies with a marabou tail out of Float tubes in the late 80s and 90s, awesome success rate. They have a foam lip, similar action to a Rapala.

The trouble with all these is that you have to really work hard to impart action - ie. strip like mad. Try doing this for hours on end and you will be traction.

Also they miss one of the main points of fishing flies IMO - you can fish flies nice and slow. I find fly often out catches lures when fishing the same water.

However I have had quite a few fish (all small) on my version of a small (1/4") Bob's banger. The foam cyclinder is wrapped in that sticky metallic foil. When wrapping it make sure it extends past the eye of the hook. Then cut away the top part of this back to the foam to form a lip in the foil. This lip combined with the resistance and buoyancy of the foam makes the fly wiggle when retrieved fast. Easy to make to. But as I say hard work to fish for any length of time.

Hi Will

If your heavily into lure fishing and follow whats been going on in the UK then you will have watched everyone learning just how often less equals more. Everyones fishing soft plastics super slow or at a standstill and keeping the input to a minimum. The slugo or other soft stick baits have zero vibration and yet are increasing catches for bass fishermen in europe

I had a phase of using wiggle fins and messed about with bibs on flies in an effort to seduce more Bass . They are good fun but reduce casting distance so you are possibly covering less fish.
