What he said. They're useless.

Oh dear. Cue the accusations of "traditional snobbery" and talk of cane rods, horse hair lines and dry flies...

Don't rock the skiff...

Hehe
I'm certainly no purist, but a Gummy Minnow is stretching a fly a bit!

....stretching it more than a surf candy?

A lot more! A Surf Candy has polar bear and bucktail (or more recently synthetic fibres) and epoxy - a gummy minnow has, well nothing like that!

Epoxy? Chris what's your definition for a fly?

I'm quite surprised we are having purist conversations on saltwater flies. I'm surprised people feel they have the authority to define it. oh well.. It's a fly for me as much as any other fly made from synthetics, tight lines. X

It's not a purist conversation, just that you need to draw a line somewhere. Would you want to strap one of these to a hook and call it a fly?
