I've thought about looking around for a nice 9 foot 3/4 weight as long as there is loads of backing on the reel and the fish are in 20 yards I can't see why it would not work, I'm looking for a nice 6 weight now for the summer bass if it was not for the weight on the flies I'd use a much lighter rod on them too. Mind nothing stopping me tying lighter flies for the job,, got me thinking now it's time to go hit the vice

I used a #3 rod and ultra small spinning reel to float fish for carp with crust.

What incredible fun that was - I can liken it to a freshwater bonefish the way these fish tore across the water.

Delightful time indeed.

I can just imagine that the chaps in the link must have a terrific time with those little wands

Airflo And flextec do some nice little rods for the job I know they not high market rods but I've never bought upper priced before so won't start now greys is about as high end as I'll go. Where I am here in Barry there are some nice little beaches where I can get away with a 4 the hardest part will be getting a take from a mullet and then I got the docks where the fish can be under my feet so be worth trying

Got a "crazy river" brook trout rod. 7ft and 3 weight from tacklebargains.co.uk, only about £30 for the rod and I caught my largest brown on it, 11lb in weight. the rod is brilliant for the dosh. I tied up some light clousers and am going to hit the salt with it as soon as the macks are in but i will need them to be very very close for me to reach them.....maybe i need a boat . Your mate is right a 3 weight would be mackerel-tastic! good luck with the ultra light stuff!

tight lines,

G

and I love that pipe crab creation, brilliant.

SKB, when are you going to stock some 1-3 weight disc drag reels and UL rods?

Targeting kingies or kahawai on anything less than a 8wt is not wise... yellow eye mullet on a 4wt is great fun.
