Im not a sea fisherman never have been is it just the bad weather that puts guys of winter fishing or are there no fish to catch ??

Im not bothered about species any thing daft enough to take my fly would be welcome

My buddy and i were thinking about giving it a bash nothing ventured and all that .....................

indeed there are fish to be caught mate deep laying pollock wrasse, whitting outing, flounder they will all take but fly size needs to be smaller and slower i found in recent years. I have taken a break from the salt after many years to pursue game fishing but will get back to it eventually.

Where I am the beaches are much to coloured to bother even trying, but lucky for me I have a docks 5 minutes drive from the house which is as clear as tap water, november 25 th I had a Bass of about a 1lb out of there I tried once again but had nothing due to work and family I have not had the chance to get back out, this week I'll be having a bash though as whiting have been caught and a few codling I only fly fish these days so am setting a challenge to catch as many species as I can, where ever you live if you have rocks, deep water and clear water then got to be worth giving it ago, by the way have a look at tying fritz in the body can't hurt for extra vibration which help fish such as cod locate food, good luck there

The Power stations in the North are a magnet for school bass during winter months due to the warm water outflows. Fly fishermen fish them and scumbags harvest them

Enjoy

Thanks Jim, seems like a settled place here.
Simples, you have a good point here mate when i took a break from fly fishing i didnt target bass though caught plenty on lures though my quarry was wrasse had them to 7lb 3oz on soft plastics fished from the shore. Most fish that will take a lure will hit a fly. I was fishing the japanesse rockfish styles a lot of the time both light and heavy with the light not unlike ultra light torut rods used in the rivers rated to cast 5-7 grams and small 1-2 inch lures 30 fish a session were manageble. Search "light rock fishing" or look here The Rock Fishing Revolution for info on the style though the skilsl are cross transferable a 6wt in salt is great fun for smaller pollock and bass indeed through the winter.

Hi rockhopper..

There are plenty of sea trout around but it depends on where you live and also whether the locals in your area are willing to share that kind of information. Generally, places with good sea trout are kept as secret as possible, so you would have to do a lot of research for your specific area.

But fishing for sea trout specifically over the winter is illegal, whether from sea shore or river. It is strictly only brown trout season, where it is allowed, not to mention you also need a migratory license, not just your general trout and course environmental one (Not saying that you didnt know that already....but just saying ) But on that note, i think there are plenty of bass fishermen out there who secretly also have a love for sea trout, and the accidental one here or there is a bonus...

Regards
rich

Hiya mate , well i live in yorkshire and my main type of fishing is seafishing be it bass in the summer or cod in the winter , so i know a majority of the locals
The ground i fish for bass i tend to come across alot of migratories jumping summertime but i think these fish are just getting ready to run the rivers so dont seem to be feeding or in taking mood , i can count on one hand the amount of seatrout being caught by mistake in over 5 years of hard plugging and by people i know ..
Yeah i know about needing a liscense .
i think the best time to target them would be when they are feeding hard around march april time ,building the energy to run .
The trouble is finding the feeding fish and thats were the problem is for me , as no one i know fishes for them and ive never seen anybody trying much
When they fish for them in the sea around northern scotland , is this taking place in summertime when the fish are getting ready to run up the rivers or when the fish are feeding ?

Rockhopper - you are right in your thinking. The seatrout will be best targetted when they are packing on weight.I would say even earlier - End Feb onwards.

You know where they are feeding already.Places where there is an abundant supply of: shrimps? smelts? herring fry? sandeels if they are there.

Don't use too small a fly! Try something about 2" long, but on a size 8 saltwater hook. Later, in march April you can go up to 4" or more.
