Hi i am new to salt water fly fishing.Just wanted to know is there any good spots for bass fishing in the south of ireland around county cork?and what kind of tackle should i be using?I have a 10 foot g-loomis distance rod rated 8 line.A 8 rio windcutter line would these be suitable or is there specific gear for the salt. Thanks in advance.

Err.. you are within the best area in Europe to catch bass
There are loads of sites online that list well known marks. Start with these and then explore that excellent coastline for others.

As for tackle use your freshwater gear just rinse it off - a 9ft 8wt or 9wt rod, basic reel and Intermediate, Floating lines, stripping basket, waders and studded boots.

As JRT says its all good down that way and backalong to Owenahinch ,and Clonakilty, your gear should be ok and bring a line tray/basket.

Your in Bass Heaven my friend...as long as you put the effort in!!! I'm up North & would kill to be where you are!!!

Your rod should be good enough to get you a taster as long as its got some backbone & your line is a great one. But do yourself a favour & get a graphite reel as I have found (only my own experience mind you) that most 'saltwaterproof' alloy reels I've used, except the big boys like Abel & Tibor, will suffer a little unless you strip everything off right to the bone (inc backing) every time & rinse & dry thoroughly...sounds simple enough but it becomes a real pain in the backside doing it over & over again every week of the season.

I use a graphite loop evotec thingy for the salt & its great (& cheap)...I just peel my flyline off & give it a good rinse. The reel just keeps going & going without issue (its in its 5th year).

A 9 weight outfit is handy when the onshore winds gets rough but an 8 is a delight most of the time.
