The exceptionally mild autumn rolls on. Sea temperatures along the coast of Hampshire and West Sussex remain around 14c, sufficient to persuade the last shoals of Thick Lipped Mullet to delay their departure for winter feeding grounds.
I fished the last two hours of daylight near the mouth of the Hamble River, more a case of being curious to see if the mullet were still around than in genuine expectation of a catch.
I was shocked to discover a large and very active shoal, feeding just off a developing rip. Within minutes a good fish was on but lost soon after. A second fish duly obliged and following a nervy twenty minute battle, a splendidly silver and very chunky thick lip came ashore. Another victim to the 'flexi-shrimp'.
