Default Cape Verde

Booked a family holiday with the intention of doing a bit of fishing for the numerous small sharks that patrol theses islands [haven't informed the wife]. Can anyone give me any advice as to if it is worth taking fly gear out there as I would love to chuck a fly off the beach and catch any half reasonable speceices.

Hi guys,
I am off to Boa Vista in 2 weeks and will be taking the beach and lure gear, didn't think to pack the fly rod but maybe I should make some room in the case? From the limited info I have found on the internet it seems like the prevailing strong winds and heavy sea may make it a difficult region to fish the fly but maybe someone else has a different view?
Regards
J

Touareg is on the south coast of island, as such gets hit by the south atlantic waves from as far away as antartica! has some of the biggest breakers on island, fly fishing is well nigh impossible, wading on the beach is even classed as dangerous due to the serious back wash from beach, never mind the breakers!

Taken on a quiet day!

Did try once, but ended up laughing my socks off at my bravado!

two minutes later was knocked on me erse by undertow!, and i am am a hardened sea fisherman!

is a lot of these beasties around though!

Problem was, even with 6 oz gripper lead, undertow often beached bait further down the coast!

Thought i should add this for realism.
is an edited wide angle view from my balcony. had to cut foreground to load on this site
flagpole on left is about 30' high!
look at wave on right!
was about average daily conditions on beach!

Beach casting for shark and various others is still possible though, but only at low and high tide, plus or minus half an hour!
One huge word of caution however, dont let familly any where near water if red/yellow flags are flying on beach. Is downright dangerous.
Sorry if am bearer of bad news, but fore warned is fore armed and all that!
regards
bert

Good report Bert. Other than the breaking waves the sea looks flat as a witches tit. I can imagine the lifeguard is kept busy. What sort species are available from boat?

JRT Its a known Blue Marlin Fishery and the usual suspects of the pelagic world too Wahoo and large Yellowfin tuna. Not sure how the stocks are now but it was talked a lot about in the late 80's. They are definitly still catching granders there. It's right by Guinea-Bissau and Gambia waters, its a true Blue Water destination.

Interesting to know if you got out in a boat Bert and if it still lived up to the hype.

Those waves are fishable with T14 but you'd need a very holy shopping basket and moocho pacience. The shore dump in the last photo looks a nightmare, hire a resort yak and fish the backline, fun launch :-)

Thanks Bert I thought this was the case but was hoping there maybe the odd jetty stretching beyond the breakers but I guess its not worth taking the fly gear. What were you taking the sharks on as a friend of mine caught lots of small sharks last year on fresh squid and prawns courtesy of the hotel chef with a little money in his back pocket, but two of my family visited the island in April this year and struggled with the same approach.
