If you plan to use only an 8 wt then my advice is - don't bother.

If you use a heavier rod (so that you can land the fish quickly and not damage them) 10wt at least; then invest in a decent saltwater intermediate and a 450 grain fast sinker.

I use an SA fast sinker and an Orvis (SA made) full intermediate. But other makes (inc Airflo) will work fine.

Hope this helps.

We often fish the channels on our trips over to the Florida Keys, and last year my pal Colin Mclachlan (Shad) had his best ever single day on the Tarpon, doing just that. He hooked 12, landed 7, with 3 of them being well over the magical 100lb mark.

All Colin's fish that day we taken using a SA Tarpon full Intermediate Line, but as Squimp suggests, when fishing such locations, we also have a 400 or 500 grain SA Tropical Express Lines set up, for fishing deeper.

Depending on the depths of the channels fished, these sinking lines may seem to be a bit heavy, but are often necessary if you need to get your fly down to somewhere near the bottom, as the flow can funnel through these channels at a fair rate of knots, depending on the state of the tide.

Brian is spot on.

It is about being flexible. There are places in Cuba where you can hook good tarpon on a floating line, but (for example) if you go the the Isle of Youth and are fishing a 25ft deep channel and the tide is pushing and the fish arent close to the surface then you need a fast sinking line.

Id reckon to use an Intermediate 60+% of the time for Cuban tarpon; a fast sinker 25% of the time and a floater for the rest.

Hope this helps.

Poly leaders

I think you're in for a bit of a shock mate. Before buying any tackle why not read up on the subject to see what's involved? I can recommend 'Tarpon On Fly' by Larmounth and Fordyte.

LOL.
Yet again another assumptive statement.
Gonna tell me the breaking strain of the core material used in every line mentioned above?
Can only assume your disregard of poly (or other material) quick change leaders is based on the assumption they will break?
Is easy to get them in same b/s as main line.
And it also makes me wonder why everyone suggests using leaders that have a far higher breaking strain than main line. (apart from the six inches or so at business end!)

Nope, my opinion is based on knowing that a crappy poly leader will make no difference to fly depth in a rip. You need an 11wt and 450-500gr line or similar and even then you'll have a few seconds of fishing time before the fly is dragged to the surface.

Also try going out with a decent tarpon guide and put a poly leader on. If he doesn't cut it off and throw it over board I'll give you £20

Going to get a 10 wt, although i landed a 40 lb,er on my eight weight,my friend had a 70lb fish on a seven weight hardy sintrix and it swam off no bother with no damage to the fish ,we watched it for ages on a large flat and it was fine

I am selling an Orivs Trident TLS #11 on the forum at this precise moment
Scott, Winston and Orvis rods for sale
I have used this rod in Cuba twice and can vouch that there are serious lumps out there and you need a minimum of #10.
