Default Sharks on the Fly

Hello everyone,
I was recently given a Loop greenline 13wt rod as a gift. old school. I am going to take it offshore in about a month with a friend to try to entice a big blacktip and see how the rod can handle it. The largest I've landed on fly so far is a 3ft lemon while bonefishing. Any advice on techniques, iflies, or leader recipes especially, would be much appreciated.

Tried it, you have to chum like crazy to get the blacktips on the go.then try a big red fly.
Quite exciting though.I love the way they jump clear of the water at 100-200 yards out.

Awesome. I can't wait for this. How long of a wire leader? The guy I am going with uses wire leader of 1.5x the expected length of the shark on his trolling rods, but that just isn't going to work on a fly rod. Any ideas?

They'll roll up on it. I'll tie up a few different ones and find out what works.

A 13 wt is a bit of an overkill on Black Tips.....Nevertheless they will still give you a bit of a run around on that kind of an outfit.

With regard to wire......No doubt whatsoever, the less wire you use, the more takes you will get. If you are worried about them rolling up on the leader and breaking off, then I would advise that you will get more offers by using a couple of ft of 300-400lb mono/flouro as a rubbing leader, topped off by 12/18" max of wire.

The last time I specifically fished for sharks on the fly, the takes I had were dramatically increased, when I cut the length of wire down to 12".....Sure I lost a few, but I can remember losing only 1 out of around 18 strikes due to the shark rolling on the leader. I lost a few more due to the hook just falling out, but if I remember correctly, I boated a mixed bag of 11 in all, consisting of Lemons, Black Tips and Bulls , with the biggest being a Bull of around the 180lb mark

For leaders, contact Tim at SpeyCo : www.speyco.net

If his Titanium (Ti-Core sink tips) leaders don't work, nothing will?

Methinks Genty is spot on!

Whilst I have not FF for sharks, I have caught an utter tonne of them and they can and do "roll" which means your line will get wrapped around their bodies and their very rough skin. A shark's skin is smooth one way and utterly rough the other - they dont have scales but minute teeth-like denticles. These will shred your skin pretty quickly.

Have fun and best of luck.
