Default Thick Lipped Mullet Weight/Length Ratio

Hi all,

I caught my first Mullet yesterday down at Hayling Island.

Has anyone reliable information on the approx weight of a thick lipped mullet which was 58cm in length ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Mark,

Well done on your catch!!
A 58cm Thick Lip would weigh in at very close to 6.5lb, very much a specimen fish. I should imagine that it gave quite a scrap on a fly rod.
Which fly did the damage and under which conditions did you catch it?
Your challenge now is to repeat the feat

Cheers

Colin

Colin ,

I knew it was a decent size as it was very thickset ( reminded me of a Striped Bass in shape) but didn't realise if was a trophy fish which now makes it worse I didn't have my camera.
In regards to fly and tactics, im afraid it's nothing groundbreaking as it was caught on a size 6 Charteuse/White skinny Clouser. I was using a stripping retrieve as I had already caught a couple of Bass from the mark shortly before. The funny thing is I had two rods with me with one set up for Mullet but as I hadn't seen any I was fishing the set up for Bass. I'm glad I got it on the Bass rod though as my Mullet set up was a five weight which would have been struggle to get it in as it went mental after hooking.
It was caught Three hours into the ebb on a **** tide in a channel in the harbour.
I was being watched by a guy who was interested in taking up SWFFing and after telling him how you have to get used to blanks etc I caught this fish first cast I think he is probably buying his kit now...
I would love to get another but would prefer to target specific fish but I'm not complaining.

Cheers,

Mark
