Default Ireland - Bettystown and Galway City

Off on the family hols in a few weeks time to Ireland. It's the only chance I ever get at a bit SWFF (its a real bummer living in Perthshire). I've caught the odd seatrout and pollock in the past but would really like a Bass or a Mullet on the fly.

We are staying in Bettystown (just north of Dublin) for the last week of July and are off to Galway City for the first week of August.

Does any one have any inside information on any of these areas they'd be willing to share?

If there are any guides in the area, I'd be quite willing to shell out for a day or two's fishing if they can put me onto a bass or mullet

Well Norm,

I'm afraid that the bass fishing isn't much good in Galway, but there are some good spots within an hour of Dublin. Some of the members from the east coast should put you right... If not PM me and i'l ask a mate of mine for some known marks. He tends to travel towards Wexford for most of his bass fishing.....

Mullet are more or less everywhere. I haven't fished for them around galway city, but there are lots of them around Roundstone and more or less anywhere i've been along the coast where there is some quiet sheltered water... I know that there can be huge numbers of them in Westport harbour.... Seen them there many times.. Sorry, but both locations are an hour or more from Galway...

All the best...

JJ

There is quality bass fishing to be had within 30 minutes of Bettystown (the marks happen to be fishing quite well at the moment) - my brother lives in Galway and we catch bass frequently together there whenever I get a chance to get over - drop me a PM if you get the opportunity - this is NOT a tout for business

I'm heading over to Bettystown tomorrow. Seems there is a bit bass fishing at the mouth of the Boyne and Bass and Mullet fishing at the mouth of the Nanny which are both pretty close to where I'm staying.

Still not heard much about Galway (I've PM'd you Jim) so if anyone has and thoughts I love to hear them.

Any last minute advice on fly selection or tactics is welcome....

Norm

News to me too, never tried SWFF in Galway but last week I took the sky road from Clifden and looking down from that height there looks like plenty of SeaTrout , Bass and Pollack SWFF'in opportunities. But I go there for the trout and not the Bass, plenty in Cork to be had.

I caught a 7 1/2lb Bass off a Connemara beach late 80s I was just past An Spiddal. There are plenty of deserted beaches on the Spiddal rd heading out towards the islands. Not very Bassy though.

If I were there I'd go to Clare (only an hour down the road). Plenty of Strands/marks around Clare, head for Lisdoonvarne/Doolin. There's a place called Whitestrand near there. Looks a peach. Try and find Lahinch to, what a surf beach wow.

Chris.

Thats a coincidence Stylie. I'm from the Sky road. I've fished there many times but not much with the fly. I will be doing so very soon... maybe even this weekend. I've never heard of anyone taking Bass or Sea trout from this location, although its likely that not many are targetting them...

Cheers

Hi JJ,

I can only go on from what I saw but there is plenty of sand and rocky areas, not sure what its like for sandeels and sprats but if they are there, then I cant think of a reason there should not be a few Bass around
I would go out with the fly immediately, a nice 40g 10ft spinning rod and a few kiltys or plugs and do plenty of roving to see where they are
On second thought I did see a few seals and I have never got Bass with in half a mile of a seal

Fished the mouth of the Boyne the last couple of nights with plenty success from the mouth at mornington.

Although a bit weedy at times, had better luck on the fly using Wee Doubles pattern Butcher on a floating line & Soldier Palmer.

Beached 11 fish over the last 2 days 8 being School Bass around 1/2 to 1 lLB. The other 3 being seatrout of very decent size.

Al returned & caught within 100yds of the Mouth of the Boyne, downstream.

A few are having luck on spinners
