Default Reels and carry on luggage when flying?

I have read several post here that I should not expect to be able to take my 4pc rods as carry on for my flight to the Bahamas (via Miami). Therefore, I will have to check them. However, I have not read much about taking reels (with backing and line) as carry-on??? I read on another forum that someone has had problems in the past with the U.S. security personal claiming that the line could be used to strangle someone

I would really prefer to take my reels on board with me as I will only be fishing for three days and just in case my luggage is lost/late it's probably easier to find a spare rod vs finding a quality reel!

What's your experience been???

I put everything in the case - it's just not worth the hassle to do otherwise. I'm dreading the trip when my case doesn't turn up though.

Same here.
Have had serious negotiations with security finding 2 or 3 reels in hand luggage.
it all goes in bag in hold now.

If you strip the line and backing from your reels and put that in your checked in luggage then the reels can be in your carry-on with no problems. Don't even dream of trying to bring your fly boxes in your carry-on though. After all if you could go berserk and start garroting everyone on board with your fly line and backing just imagine what you could do with a size 20 F Fly!!!!

Take care

Too many different interpretations in what after all are quite simple laid down rules about what can and cannot be carried on board an aircraft...... I gave up a long while ago getting frustrated by the fact that I was told to carry my rods, and reels on board internal US flights, but on international or internal flights, this was a strict No No as far as flights out of or between UK airports were concerned.

For the last 5 or 6 years now, my reel spools have gone as hold luggage and the reel cages go as carry on luggage.....Do this mainly to assist with hold luggage weight restrictions, which are getting pretty stingy, especially on internal USA flights.

Oh and taking a printed set of these rules and waiving them in front of an official who has just stopped you, I promise you, is not a very good idea, and definitely DOESN"T WORK

Same issues here in Europe. After a heavy negotiation with A/P security I had to put all my gear into the checked luggage. Neither 7 piece travel rod not reel, flies etc had been allowed into the cabin. I was told by a security guy there are no explicit rules, but according to their instructions ALL fishing gear without exception must be checked in.

I thought about taking the line and backing off but then it's a real pain to put it back on in the hotel room without a winder. Also you will never be able to put the backing on tight enough without a winding machine and then you run the risk of the backing cutting into itself and the fish breaking off. I have seen this happen many times!

I have traveled many times with my reels and flyboxes as carry-on luggage. And have never had any kind of problems (even though I have the same beard as Osama..) I asked a couple police officers in FL about carrying rods. They said thgis was ok as long as you check them at the gate. This way you will receive the rod as soon as the plane lands and you get off.
Carrying the essential gear on trips to Bahamas is a good idea, as luggage tend to get lost/delayed.

I have always flown with my reels within my hand luggage but not in/out of US airspace - only within UK and in/out UK and Bahamas and South Africa.

Never had it checked, searched or had to remove line.

Lures, hooks and rods etc must go in checked luggage but, again, been fine flying rods inside the US and out of SA into UK but DO NOT try it out of UK.

You could take over the World with an Orvis "ought" weight you know
