Default Mackrel

Hi

Due to my enforced exile in Cornwall (Bude) I am trying to find out where and when or if it is possible to catch Mackrel off the shore.

I have an 8 weight outfit and a selection of decievers and clouser etc that never got used on an ill fated trip to Oz.

So I cant stomach eating any more Trout and also cant afford to keep fishing Trout waters in the area so I would like to try an christen my set on some Mackrel or anything else for that matter that I can catch from the beach, I do not expect anyone to give the best spots away but would be gratefull of any info on possilble spots. I have looked along the beaches but it looks to shallow to be any good ??, not having a clue where to start any advice would be gratefull recieved.

Many thanks

Steve

hello a very tasty fish if i might add, enforced !!!. many on here know your area is a mecca for fishing, beauty, oh and nice pastys as the weather warms up should be coming in closer to shore maybe look for fishing off rocks into deeper water, dizzard point, was good with feathers years ago. but i hope some forum members will know better for you now. get the barby out too and happy fishing

the deeper the water the better, have a look on worldseafishing.com forums. they have boards on each area of the uk and theres loadsa local info on where the macky are being caught, but i must say, its probably going to be a struggle to find a good spot on the fly, normally just crouds of people on piers throwing spinners out. but good luck anyway!!

Have you ever been to Cornwall - its the pits! And everyone knows the pasty was first produced in Devon.

I have always caught makerel from a boat... in fact very boat trip I have done has ended up with shed loads of makerel, even when we were fishing for shark! I would agree that deeper water is more likely, there are times in the year when they shoal in massive swarms to the beach following the sprats / sand eels etc , I knew a harbour where once a year you could have scooped them up in a bucket when this was going off!

But never in Cornwall, as the fish are just weird on that side of the Tamar

cornwall has plenty of spots for mackerel, but the north coast boasts the best bass venues in the country.

the problem with mackerel from shore is they normall all swim around at about 12 foot deep...

i used to fish with a sinking line i DIYed into a shooting head with 30lb amnesia (about 12 years ago). caught loads on cats whiskers then had to hand haul the mackerel up the pier walls (great fun )

if you visit the popular spots try first light as it can get busy.

or you could chase the bass from the beach, try low tide then high tide with large lures and streamers.

it is realy trial and error and having the confidence to do it in front of die hard feather chuckers.

best of luck
