Banished to Portsmouth
Evening all. Having just moved to Harefield (in the heart of the Colne Valley - carp country) it stands to reason that as a Naval officer I've been posted to Portsmouth, starting in mid-July. I'll be living down there Monday-Friday, and the idea of fluff-chucking in the salt down there is growing on me.
I'm not a newcomer to fishing the salt, but I am in the UK - the most recent experience I had was over a year ago, night fishing the docks for snook and stalking (and most often spooking) tailing redfish while 'working' in Tampa. Sight fishing really gets me going, so mullet may be the most obvious quarry.
I'm asking two things - one specific, one general. The specific one is; I'll be based at Whale Island, tucked up in the estuary and hopefully spared the worst of tidal flows. I don't really want to shell out for a kayak and am minded to have a go at float-tubing the estuary itself. Does this seem practical and potentially productive (and yes, I know there are too many 'p's in that last bit). Secondly, are there any gurus in the area who, having read this, would be willing to show a newbie to the area around? I don't expect to be handed the key to all the local secrets, but a few pointers would be very gratefully received.
Many thanks in advance for any and all replies,
John
