Default starting salt water fishing

Ok folks I've decide that too many days are sat with my kitesurfing gear waiting for the wind so as an extension of my river fly fishing can anyone out there recommend:

1/ What gear do I need? I do have an option to fish from a kayak so something that would do beack/rocks & kayak would be best?

2/ Are there any good books DVD worth reading watching?

3/ I live in North Wales, anyone else out there I could team up with for a day out? (preferably free!) or can anyone direct me to any good spots, no issue in travelling bur generally LLeyn, Anglesey, and North Coast most places convenient.

4/ How do you know where the fish are?

TIA Frank

Generally 9ft rod, reel with a drag, salt proof one is best.
8wt floating and inter line
tippet and some flies.
waders is a good bet as well.

Where abouts in North Wales.Be moving there hopefully in the next 6-8week and can show you the ropes as I do alot of swff. Will be based near Blaenau Ffestiniog.

I live between Ruthin & Mold but Blaenau is but a drive away as most places here are, I'd love to take up your offer, I'll PM you with my contact details
Cheers

Some tips:
9ft 8wt rod and 8wt floater and Intermediate line is a good start (Airflo Coldsaltwater 40+ £25). Reel isn't that important.
Learn to cast with a minimum false casts.
You'll find line management is a big deal so buy/make a line tray.
If you fish off rocks buy some decent boots with studs.
For flies learn to tie clousers in size 2 and 1 and you'll catch fish.
You'll double your chances of catching something if you fish out of a kayak. But buy/make a drogue and learn how to anchor before fishing rips. Always wear a BCD and buy a VHF.

Good luck

Hi Frank, already a lot posted on gear, a quick look through recent topics should give you all you need.

This Forum has more(Up to Date) info in this section than books and DVD's currently out there. You'll also get reative advice.

Saltwater Flyfishing - Paul Morgan and Friends
Hooked on Bass - Excellent learning on bait behaviour and terrain etc.
Flyfishing with a pinch of salt - Mike Ladle and geoff hancock
OS map and tide table.
Notebook and pen

You have awesome fishing around you - just go to sea and start the journey. You wont get marks on a public forum and people will just close up on all info when people push for them. Doing well at SWFFing in this country requires legwork and effort. The results are far more rewarding and as people get to know you and trust that you wont share their marks then you will fish with more and more people. It's sad that thats the way but unfortunately due to fantastic Fishery management it's just the way it is.

"How do you know where the fish are?"

By doing what you are about to :-) Read this forum to get advice on tides and flies etc. Study OS maps looking for structure, rivers bays and tidal flows. Go down to the coast and fish those at different locations at different states of tide and times and wind directions. All fish differently. Luckily the fish are mobile and you will run into them. You'll figure out the locations then start catching reguarly. Take notes and record your outings.

Good luck - keep asking questions and applying the answers

Only one thing to add, as soon as you start swaffing the wind will come up and you will be wishing you had the kite gear.

Fly Rodding the Coast by Ed Mitchell and Inshore Fly Fishing by Lou Tarbory are both written for the US market but are probably the best books on actually fishing the coast and how to approach it.

Most of the time I'm out fishing the weather is perfect for kite surfing
