Default First SWFF attempt in Spain

I'm on holiday in Sanlucar de Barrameda in Spain and have got myself geared up for my first attempt at SWFF. The beach at Sanlucar is sand and is actually the estuary of the Guadalquivir River, which is rather a big river.

So this morning I had my first go. It was an hour after high-tide, which I know is not the best time. I decided on this spot where a stream runs into the estuary.

Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Spain - Google Maps

The water was quite murky, so I stuck on a brightly coloured streamer, waded into the water mid-calf and give it a go. Didn't get any knocks, but there were plenty of decent fish within 20 feet of me, swirling in the shallow water. I suspect they were mullet, as they were not really doing much, and I'd found a dead half-eaten one about 3lb on the beach the day before.
I tried all sorts of lures and colours, prawn type things, and gurglers, all to no avail.

I'll try later on tonight just before high tide. I might try chucking a bit of bread in as well, and a white deer hair fly.

Can anyone suggest anything else I can try?

Cheers,
Mike

I've caught Mullet in brackish water using boiled spaghetti in short lengths. I was eating the Corfiot speciality Pastitsada and watching the Mullet in the 'canal' at Levkimi and put two and two together. That was using float gear though, I'm not sure you can fly-cast pasta very far!

The best bait for Mullet I've ever used is bread paste mixed with tinned sardines (in oil). I've caught a few small Mullet and Giltheads on fly gear using this under a hook with artificial bread as an indicator (it floats and it stays on the hook). I must say it was a lot easier with light float gear. Mullet are past masters at stripping the bait off a hook without opening their mouths so be prepared for some frustration.

Default Mad dogs etc

Cheers for the replies fellas! Maybe I should just ignore the mullet
I've heard there are plenty of bass here, and a big thing called Corvina which grows to 100lb but maybe not in the shallows

We've just been down the beach with the kids for a couple of hours. Very hot here - mid 30s. The tide was out so I had a daft go again with the fly rod. One thing I noticed is that it's very shallow, and the tidal range is about 1.2m based on this site which I'm finding useful

2011 Tide Table for Sanlcar de Barrameda, Cdiz and Solunar Tables for fishing in Sanlcar de Barrameda <(((><

Anyway, no bites again, but not surprising when my 5yr old daughter is leaping up and down next to me in the water

Might try later on into dusk at high tide if I haven't succumbed to the cerveza

Small black coloured nymphs can tempt the Mullet in murky water. I tye mine using 'black bin-bag' for shell back, without any weight to keep them close to the surface, where the fish are feeding. Use the streams current to drift a team of flies towards a feeding shoal. Easy as that!! Except that the Mullet consume then eject a fly so quickly that you will be cursing your slow reactions. Persevere though, eventually one will stick.
Adios
Colin

Thanks TM, I have some #10 dark hares ear shrimps I can use.
I've not been out fishing tonight, I got "dragged out" for tapas & cerveza

I'll give it a go in the morning - I just hope my glowing red legs don't scare them off
