Default advice, questions, what tippet strain etc?

hi everyone

i need some advice for which tippet strain to buy, i was thinking seagaur floro of about 23pounds breaking strain. is this too heavy?

i will be fishing the coast in scotland in rocky places etc for pollack, mackeral, anything that will take my fly!
(oh, other question, is end of april too soon for sea fly fishng on north coast of scotland in april/may, near dunnet bay)
will mostly fish south west scotland coast, will the fuish be there just now?

my new set up I have is a 9foot 9/10 weight rod with a floating line.

will i need a slow sinking line like a Di3 ?

also how best to set up my floating line, do I need a sinking leader? would my salmon ones do?
which length of tippet to use?
will the breaded loop be OK to use?

i have a small pack of sea flies and plan to use these.
mixed bag, look salty to me

also I read loads on the other thread about making your own line basket, I think I will give this a go too.

thanks in advance for any answers and tips.
cheers
rusty

I use 15lb seagur. id opt for something less heavy especially if you start switching to small flies early season.

Cant speak to your specific marks but standard advice applies. Is it deep water or shallow ground? Are the fish on the top or the bottom? This will change. Macks come up at night and go down in the day.

Your salmon sink tips will be fine just check B.S. its normally above 15lb. Wash and test before reuse

Thats a very heavy weight rod for the uk. I would steer you to 8# if possible.

Dont make assumptions on salt flies - Many are far too heavily dressed and are US and international fly's and a waste of time here. What have you got?

Braided loops are fine but I never use trout loops and generally create my own and secure them properly.

hey Guys
thanks so much for the advice.
came in today and my new flies from Chris at Salt Shack have arrived!
I am sitting here admiring them as I type, they are works of art!
what a fantastic service from Chris.

I think my salmon sink tips are OK then, and thanks for advice on the Seaguar.

Jim, you have given me great advice on here a number of times, thank you so much.

Oh, will my usual 2 arm lengths of tippet do for sea fishing?

Regards my braided loop, the chap at John Norris put it on the line for me when I ordered online so I am not sure what kind it is but looks OK and substantial.

I'll let you both know how I get on, I hope it is not too early for pollack etc when I go on holiday.

The thing that fasinates me the most is that with sea fishing, anything can jump on your hook!

Cheers
Rusty
