Default Missing Bags!!!

Hi
I popped into Sportfish London yesterday to pickup a new fishing specific wheeled holdall which would take all of my kit including Tubed 4 Piece Fly Rods, clothing and all the other garb nessecary for a fly fishing holiday.

One of the helpful assistants mentioned that he had heard of Logo'd bags like Sage, Loomis and Orvis going missing en route because it was obvious they contained fishing tackle.

Has anyone else heard of this because the last thing I want is to plan that dream trip to find all my gears gone missing before I start.

Thanks

He's right. Make your luggage as tatty and indescriminate as possible. Also these bags have loads of stupid zips on them so easy for the casual thief.
I now have a 33" tube bag that looks really basic.

I use to take an old army duffle bag until my wife decided it looked too shabby and ditched it. My tactic was to put the boots in the bottom, rod tubes inserted in the boots and then pack the clothes around them. Impossible to tell that there were any rods once packed and it looked like the sort of bag only some poor starving student would use so no interest in stealing it. The biggest problem is that these bags are not waterproof and you have to pack things in the order you will need them so do not put your shaving kit in first as you'll have to empty the entire bag to get to it.

Take care

Terry

I'll sell you an Airflo version very cheap if you want one.

Or get a big duffle type bag and then find a piece of land drainage pipe the right diameter (say 6") to fit all your rods inside. Put that in the bag and pack around it.

I've had rods nicked from a KIS tube in transit. The tube was opened and the best ones taken, then it was closed again. Perfect crime!

Hope this helps.

Depends on where you are going. it would appear that most bags go missing at havana airport.

You're right, that did help - I will keep an eye out for any KIS tubes with your name on it!!

As someone who works in the airline industry I would strongly recommend that you pack your 4 piece rods in their tubes along with your gear in a tough but plain looking, standard, hard sided, lockable (TSA lock preferably) suitcase. For me, a well used Samsonite is perfect.

I too like the look of the fishing holdalls out there but they scream 'steal me'. Soft bags with padlocked zips are almost laughable in the security they offer. Unless the material happens to be impervious to a blade

Pretty much anything can be stolen and broken into given time. The trick is to make your luggage appear unattractive and/or difficult to get into quickly.

The nice new Sage holdall coming along the conveyor belt or my battered plastic case? Which one would you choose to pilfer?

It's not a foolproof system but it's served me well for many years.

Cheers.

We'd like to Bert but those security chaps make us check all our gear in as well.

Can't have a lethal looking fly rod in the flight deck right next to the er............fire axe.

You couldn't make it up.
