Default Walkie Talkies / 2 Way Radios

Do any of you guys have any recommendations for walkie talkies that are suitable for using out on the flats. I'd like to get a set for Christmas Island later this year.

Any info appreciated

Cheers,
Chris

Chris, don't know what's available in the UK, but 'over here' we have choice after choice after choice.

What ever you consider (and you will pay-up for it) 'Range' is everything. Remember most of these sets are going to be very low wattage (1 to 5) so the less expensive ones will be (basically) 'line of sight.' Put a lot of 'stuff' (trees/hill/what-ever) between you and the other set and the 'low end' ones aren't that effective.

The higher wattage ones are what you need; not the inexpensive toy ones. You're going to spend the money, so spend a few $$ more and get good ones.

Edit: Forgot to add, the more pricie ones will usually have two (transmission) power settings. A good thing.

Fred

Thanks for the link Noel, I've emailed them with a couple of questions.
We will be using them either on the flats or on boats so won't be too far from each other and shouldn't be any trees in the way

I got a couple of Motorola Talkabouts a few years ago. Picked them up for £20 odd on ebay. They are just fine for round a big loch or anywhere you get line of sight but not much use in terrain - not that that should bother you on the water.

Chris, do a google search or even check out Argos

Buy Science Museum Walkie Talkies at Argos.co.uk - Your Online Shop for Science Museum.

As long as you're not going bush these will fit your purposes.
