Default tropical line choice

What line do you guys out there use in an eight weight when fishing tropical waters, some of the bonefish lines mention long tapered tips probably not the best when trying larger flies for baby tarpon, jacks etc any tips on a good all rounder for the best of both worlds cheers

Default Tropical line

Hi. I allways used SA lines. I used the grey ones Ultra 4 and now the newer Horizon coloured. They have performed well even in windy conditions and fail with bigger flies. I was recently recommended the Lee Wulff so I am going to try these out in the Bahamas in a few weeks. IŽll post a comment when I get back.

I use both SA Mastery Bonefish line (8wt) and Lee Wulf Triangle Taper - 8 and 9wt. Both perform well; better than me, anyway. I don't seem to have particular trouble with "larger" flies, but I suppose it depends what you mean by "Larger". For Jacks I always use a 12wt, as I like to get back to base before nightfall, and any way, it's kinder to get the fish un-hooked asap.

I have always used the SA Mastery Bonefish line and the Rio equivilent not really had any problems with larger flies. Have noticed the tips on some of these lines seem to sink on me after use. On my last trip in November I was given an airflo ridge line and was really impressed. Castwell and was a nice slick line.

Depends what your budget is. I've been using the Bermuda Triangle Taper and love it. You don't want to get too many of them shredded up or it becomes an expensive line choice!

These days, I can't drum up any enthusiasm to do a round trip of some 6000+ miles just to fish for bonefish, but we all start off with them and in the days when I chased them here there and everywhere, after much experimentation, I too finally settled on the Bermuda Triangle. A great line which will do everything you need it to do in most bone fishing situations, and other than when I am chasing the big momma Tarpon, GT's or the like, I still use them in many situations for my tropical fishing, and can assure you they are very capable of turning over much bigger or heavier flies than you are likely to need in any bone fishing situation.

The only slight downer I have on them is that as they get older, you do need to keep them really clean, otherwise there is a tendency for them to sink in parts. By clean, I mean a good wash in soapy water after no more than a couple of sessions. If I were using them every day on a 7 day trip, I would give them a real good clean at least a couple of times during that period.

I use SA bonefish lines as standard. The Cortland lines I also like - but they seem to wear quickly.

However on my last trip (Nov '10) my partner tried the new Airflo Ridge lines and was really impressed. And he CAN fish. They would save you quite a bit of cash.

Hope this helps.
