Default Salmon Equipment advice, please

Moving on from my thread about the Rutherford Beat, my son has decided he wants to buy the equipment since he feels he will have other opportunites to use it.

I have been charged with investigating and probably purchasing on his behalf.

As previously stated, I know nothing about Salmon fishing so would appreciate any help on the equipment I should be considering.

In terms of rod make, Bruce and Walker is the name that seems to crop up most but are there others to consider? Reel type and are sinking and sink tip lines necessary? Also the best length for an "allrounder", if there is such a thing.

I have emphasised try before you buy..this is to compile a list to "try".

Many thanks,

Hi,

it depends on you budget really. a good cheap rod is a shakespere odessey. you'll be looking at a 15 footer. the hardy mach lines or the snowbee 2d are great lines, you can just buy the floater and then buy a set of polyleader sink tips and this will cover you for almost all situations.
And regards a reel you need a large Arbour reel with a good drag system. once again it depends on budget.

Tom

Roy,

I no longer salmon fish and have a full kit that you/your son might be interested in.
The rod is a Bruce & Walker 'Expert', not in their current range but with great reports when it was launched.

The reel is Shakespear salmon reel with two spare spools loaded with matching floating, sinktip and sinking lines (#10).

You'd probably want to upgrade the reels to wide arbour at some stage but right now it's all a well balanced rig thats ready to fish with in all water conditions.

£100 + postage and it's yours.

When you've finished looking around let me know if you are interested.

Regards

Nidd.

Thanks for the offer but I think he wants to go new or VG second hand.

It seems we have £500 to play with for rod, reel and a couple of lines.

I've heard quite good things about the Greys XFlight in Trout rods..are they OK on Salmon?

The X-flite rods are tremendous Salmon rods for the price, I'd have a chat with Grommit on here

I'm sure he could do you a very good deal

It's very easy to buy tackle that doesn't match or isn't really suitable and (as you've said) trying before you buy is key. Consider the following:

1. Book a lesson with a qualified instructor (AAPGAI etc).
2. Based on his/her advice, the kit you are able to try during your lesson and the feedback you get via forums spend ~£400 on a suitable set up (more than enough for some really good kit).
3. Book another lesson with the new set up.

This should mean that you don't waste your money on the wrong kit and the chances are you'll get far more enjoyment from your trip to Tweed. You don't want to go to a quality beat like Rutherford and come away frustrated/sore/fishless with a sleeve of expensive varnished sticks for next year's tomatoes. Good luck.
