Default Mersey salmon

Do any forum members have information on salmon fishing on the Mersey and possible places to try. I'm always up for a challenge!

I would start by buying an EA Salmon & Migratory Trout licence: do you have one?

A challenge is a bit of an understatement
I've had a few out over the years but it's a very small window of oppertunity.

Was this on fly or other method? Weight? How far upstream was this? Do you need a permit from angling club or owners? I only use fly....as I said, I love a challenge!
How much does a EA salmon rod licence cost. We don't have rod licences up here in Scotland.

Fly Guy,

The link below will give you info on rod licence cost. Like you I am a Scot but as I fish in England at least once a year so I have to get a license. For salmon a license is £72 per annum, £23 for 8 days and £8 per day.

Environment Agency - Buy your rod licence online - no service charges

I wouldn't know where to start on the Mersey, I have heared EA stories of Salmon being sighted at Warrington. How high do you think they get? Manchester?

i know of salmon being caught from the mersey in manchester and seen 2 caught in the same session from a smaller feeder river of the mersey only last week. but these were both caught on spinners and released. i dont know alot about salmojn but these fish had a very white belly. they were caught from a deep slack next to a shallower faster area.

Food for thought.

Loved the picture of the Goyt parr. Its hard to believe that salmon are capable of migrating the length of the mersey, long may they do so.

Amazing (salmon running the Mersey - and what's more being caught by anglers) ... But true (I wrote a news story for Trout and Salmon magazine a couple of years ago about one caught further up the river and I spoke to the guy (it wasn't his first Mersey salmon). The fish was a coloured hen fish of about 8lb.

dankay123 - the very white belly means one thing: these were fresh fish!

To go back to the original question - I don't want to in any way be a spoil-sport or put you off trying but I'm afraid I would recommend travelling a bit further north, to at least the Ribble, Lune (good water on the Tebay or Sedbergh angling clubs) or one of the Solway rivers on the English (Eden, Esk) or Scottish (Annan, Nith) sides. That's where you have a real chance of a salmon - especially from August (given rain), onwards
