Amazing (salmon running the Mersey - and what's more being caught by anglers) ... But true (I wrote a news story for Trout and Salmon magazine a couple of years ago about one caught further up the river and I spoke to the guy (it wasn't his first Mersey salmon). The fish was a coloured hen fish of about 8lb.

dankay123 - the very white belly means one thing: these were fresh fish!
To go back to the original question - I don't want to in any way be a spoil-sport or put you off trying but I'm afraid I would recommend travelling a bit further north, to at least the Ribble, Lune (good water on the Tebay or Sedbergh angling clubs) or one of the Solway rivers on the English (Eden, Esk) or Scottish (Annan, Nith) sides. That's where you have a real chance of a salmon - especially from August (given rain), onwards
