Default Spinning rod advice

i've just dug out of the attic an old custom made spinning rod i didnt know i still had, its eight and a half feet long and has a test curve of around two to two and a half...im not sure which as there isnt a single detail on it
My question is would this be adequate enough to have a go for salmon and seatrout on the ribble and lune?
your advice on this matter would be much appreciated.
All the best Andy

As long as it aint a cane rod!
lying around in attic for years will have made it brittle if it is!
Is a foot or so shorter than most folks prefer, I use a 9 foot for most of my worming or spinning, a lot of folk prefer longer.
Is casting weight that really counts when spinning, try it out with a variety of leads, till you find the weight you are comfortable with in relation to rod flex.

I am sure it would work, however........you can buy a modern spinning rod on ebay or similar for 20-30 quid. For instance, I paid £95 for Grey's spinning rod a few years ago, which I keep at my static caravan in God'scountry (SW Scotland). For home,I have an ebay special. You know what,if anything, the ebay spesh is more sensitive, yet can whack out a size 3 mepps ........more important is a good reel, with bearings and a clutch which won't let you down when you hook a cracker.....!

I'm sure the rod will do just fine, although a 2 1/2 lb test curve is a hell of a lot of grunt! So sounds like it was maybe made more with piking in mind. Have a play around and get a feel for it - if you like it then stick with it, if not then get yourself an Ugly Stik - cracking rods, relatively inexpensive and strong as hell!

I use a 9' rod on my local river, it's a Hardy Fibatube glass blank and I've landed fish of up to 13lbs on it quite happily. As others have said it's a question of using a reel with a good clutch set to the correct drag and the importance of the rod is really more aligned to its ability to throw a lure. You might find that a 2lb (or more) test curve struggles to throw a smaller lure accurately.

On the bigger rivers like the the Lune and Ribble most would prefer a slightly longer rod as it gives more control over the bait at longer ranges but that's a minor point.

If it doesn't work then you can get a very good rod from eBay or the dealers for less than £60 provided you don't chase the bigger brand names. My current rods for the bigger rivers are a 10' rod bought from eBay for £25 and a 9' 6" Kunnan "Carboglass" that works well with a multiplier, my reel of choice for the larger baits and heavier breaking strains.

Perfectly good rod but if it is the model with the offset reel seat it is designed for use with a multiplier.

I've got a 9' ABU DIPLOMAT and found it to a great rod, just dont try casting it with a lure or weight of at least 10/12g as it takes a lot to get a bend in it.
