Default novice seeking line advice for new rod

Hi folks,

I was very lucky to get a 14' rod from Santa this year (2nd hand Guideline Lpxe 9/10 wt).

I would be very grateful if people would recommend a line to go with it.

I am a novice Spey caster, so please assume total ignorance and use words of two syllables! Simplicity is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Matt

I'm not going to advise you but can I suggest you read this document a few times to help you to understand what your options are before getting anything. It is the best guide I know.http://www.rioproducts.com/skin/summ...Lines_2012.pdf

Excellent - thank you.

If you *were* to advise me, what would you say?

Thanks marty - I was thinking about them, but there seem to be a bewildering diversity. Is it possible to buy one 'set up and ready to go', so to speak?

I would suggest you try before you buy. What suits me might not suit you. Try some of your mates' lines. Or whatever you used before just because you have a new rod it does not mean you need a new line.

In this case, I think a new line is probably necessary! Seeing as using a current line would involve putting a 7wt line on a 10wt rod...

Or putting a 10wt pike line on a salmon DH rod. I did think about this - has anyone done this? Does it work? I imagine it would work perfectly well for overhead casting, but not for spey casting.

Have you Speycast a double handed rod before?
If you have not it will be very difficult for you to know what you want.
I am very tempted to suggest lessons but some on here disapprove of this advice.

Matt,

I wouldn't advise you what to use for a couple of reasons. Firstly I haven't used the rod although I used a longer version of the Guideline LPXE which I liked with a Rio Proline 75ft head and it also cast the Rio AFS very well.

Secondly I am not a great double handed speycaster by any means and wouldn't presume to advise anyone on how to use or set up a double handed rod.

Like Williegunn I would have suggested that a couple of hours with a good instructor like Andrew Toft, Ian Kirk or Gary Scott will save you a lot of pain!

The link I attached (which is written by Simon Gawesworth who is a very fine speycaster) will tell you a lot about line ratings.

You will find that a Pike line will be far too light for your salmon rod - even overhead casting. Salmon lines don't conform to single handed line ratings. It's a royal Pain in the backside for newcomers. Especially as different casting styles require different grain weights on the same rod.
