Default Need Help Identifying Action of A Salmon Rod;

Hello,

Specifically I would like to know if you have any experiences with the vintage Hardy Sovereign line of rods. These were made a while back and I am considering buying one in 14' 6" #9. I will hazard a guess that whether you have cast a 9' 6" or a two hand rod the actions will be similar throughout the line up of rods.

Thank you for any reply,

Ard

Hello Ard,

I'm sure they were good rods (though I dont know what specific action they were) - but surely they are a bit 'long in the tooth'. Peronally, I would take a closer look at more modern versions.

They were a through action rod although they did have a little mid to them.They are suited to traditional spey lines and i suppose skagits would be fine on them

Thank you both for the feedback, and thanks to Jim Doyle as well for his PM to me.

Colin,

I actually prefer the older rods and the medium to full actions over todays fast rods. My biggest concern is usually the size and height of the guides on some older sticks. I have a long winter ahead before I'll need to worry on a rod but will be on watch for another of these old ones.

Marty,

I am currently using what SA called a short head line. This has a 55' head and seems to suit my fishing well with a fairly stiff 13' rod. If I find and buy a 14' 6" #9 in a more moderate action I would be changing to a long belly type line. I'm not a distance fanatic, I'm a easy going sort. If you were to see one of these rods for sale you can always let me know here.
