Default Cyclical fishing

Hi All, Ive long been a believer that salmon runs are somewhat cyclical in nature, usually on a 3 year cycle. I read an interesting article in a mag about the once great Fraser river that had a 3 year 'big run' and got to thinking about other rivers. 'My' river in Iceland (sadly not fished this year) had a relatively poor season with 728 fish this year. last year the catch was over 1,200 and the year before 1,250. before this the catch was 800 odd. Does anyone else see this sort of cycle in salmon, and what would be the cause?
