Default Basic fly selection for salmon newbie..!!!

Hi all

I'm putting together a basic 8wt outfit for Salmon/Sea Trout and I'm wondering if anyone can give me some ideas for a basic Salmon Fly Selection.

I'll be fishing around Northern Ireland next week but I expect The Dee around Llangollen and the Wye and Usk passport waters will also feature heavily next year.

Many Thanks

Ally shrimps various colours, cascades, stoats tails etc

For bigger water you might like to think of some tube flies willie gunn, black and yellow for the early season black and orange for the back end. Maybe some whitewings for the dusk.

Depth and speed is more important that pattern in my experience.

Tightlines

Couldn't agree more, size and weight can help there, so some patterns in different sizes and weights black and yellow, black and orange and some shrimps.

Along with depth and speed, I think fly size is relevant, too. I don't know all the rivers on your list, but in Northern Ireland, and certainly on the Wye, the fish seem to like their flies quite small. So although on some rivers sizes 6-10 might be reckoned to cover most situations, I'd suggest that you get some 12s and even possibly 14s.

I agree with CharlieH, I think I'm often guilty of fishing a too large a fly but it just feels so right!
