Default Scales reveal where salmon go at sea

Research from the University of Southampton has shown that by studying carbon isotopes in a salmon’s scale rings they can identify the feeding conditions and therefore approximate sea area where they were feeding.

Studies so far indicate that salmon from the River Frome have been feeding off Iceland and salmon from the north east of England have been feeding in the Norwegian sea.

Scale samples have been routinely studied from many rivers over many years so there is a very large bank of data which could give us some excellent detailed knowledge about the travels of different salmon populations.
