Welcome,If your just allowing the fly to swing round with the river then you need to wait for the Salmon to turn (most times) before you lift into it. If you are retrieving and you feel a fish then you need to lift into it.

My transition to salmon was eased by the fact that I had preferred fishing with streamers for trout for a large part of my fishing life. I find the difference between the two pursuits to be subtle but important ones. Getting the fly down is the key for most salmon due to the fact that they will lie in deeper water than we usually fish in for trout with the fly. Knowing where that sunken fly is at and being able to control where it is at and where it will go are second in line on the priority list.

As far as there being some different technique to getting the salmon on the hook point, I find no difference between the salmon and the trout. A salmon will grab a fly. Every year I see around 100 instances of the preceding statement and some years even a larger number. I do not 'strike', the fish will do that and if anything I sometimes do a bit of a light pull on the line to make sure I have a good hold of the fish.

If you would like information including leader configuration for a sinking leader and fly patterns that consistently catch fish you may send a PM to me. I will answer you as I have time and will provide links to information that I have embedded on our North American Forum. I realize you are fishing for Atlantic salmon as opposed to Pacific fish as I do but in the end they are salmon. I came to Alaska from the eastern United States and have fished the Atlantic fish and their land locked cousins along with all of the lake run fish that were available. My techniques have been honed on a good variety of salmon and trouts.

Hi flyfishing4lifejack, welcome to the Forum.

Interesting first post. Where are you fishing for salmon? What style/method? I assume you have had several takes and plucks, but are just not connecting. For what it's worth I 'give' them half a loop of line before lifting into them.

Summer. small flies and mostly Grilse its worth tightening quickly as you would with trout if the 'normal' method isn't working.
