Full Line or shootinghead, if full do you like long medium or short head?
Personaly I prefer a Skagit Short with some t14 on the end for getting down with a wet fly on the Tongariro, or a Scandi short for Nymphing and shallower wet fly.
All the best.
Mike

whoa! that took some reading, last time I brought a line people thought you was a "flash b$*%!@d" if you used anything other than a DT10 with waddington on the end of it

I`ve never tried any of the shooting heads but for the amount of fishing I do and budget I`m sticking to ( honest dear, it was a bargain!) a full line would be the way to go.

out of preference I`d say a shortish head but having only used the hardy line I can`t really compare it to anything.

Is it just a floater you are looking for?

The Snowbee 1D (52ft head) is a good line I used one on thre Greyflex and it went well. The trouble with it is that it has a fine front taper so can have issues with turn over if you fish tips it.

The Mach 55 (55ft head) is the new version of the Mach2 and is a good line too not so many issues with turnover.

I think you need to consider when and where you are fishing that might help advice.

Whart about a multi tip line, I think Airflo do some that get a good report. Have a look on the SFF, there is a lot of dicussion on there regarding lines.

You may wish to 're-think your thinking.' Where do you fish, how do you fish, how wide is the water you fish, how deep is the water, how fast ..... etc., and etc.

In the Scandi contries and here in the PNW majority of us have gone to 'short head lines,' and for good reason. Depending upon the line (Skagit vs Scandi) you can cast a length of Bike Chain or sinking poly leader ... or a full on dry leader with the same 'head.' And the 'good guys' can put either out to 100 - 120 feet with a flick of a wrist. (I'm good, but not that good.)

Both RIO and Airflo (Steve Rajeff) have a huge number of their lines pared off with rods (US and off shore) for comparative purposes. You might want to take a look? The major 'down side' of the shorter heads is you have to 'strip in' the shooting line before each cast; but depending on what's on the end of your line, ..... not a bad thing unless it's colder than hell.

Fred has it right on the "head"
But if you want to stick to a full line then have a look at Rio, there lines are very good and they have some fantastic removable tip systems to let you fish everything from floating to very fast sinking tips off the same line.
All the best.

Mike be 'correct;' just a question of how wide a system you need/want for your fishing conditions. The multi-head lines are a treat if you just want 'one.' 'One' as everything is on the reel or in the carry pouch.

Only speaking for my small corner of the world, most of us don't use them, did .. but don't anymore. We 'line up' based on what we know the fishing conditions are going to be and just change out the 'business end.' More often than not it will be a full floater and a Type 3 and Type 6 sink head (or "T" this or that ..... and the full floater.

Personally, I rarely use a full on sink tip but use Pollies and "T-11 or T 17" tips (cut to my order, just buy a 'run' of the material and cut to what ever lenght you want**) all the time. "One size does not fit all."

Fred

** "T" is 'tungsten coated mono. The '8,' '11,' '17,' etc., stands for 'grains per foot.

carron jet stream 65 or 55 foot head, mackenzie dtx g2, or if you like you can borrow a next cast line from me on trial for a two week period if you pay postage both ways these lines are also excellent, but as other posters mention there are quite a few variables i think for you a 55 to 65 head would be perfect, there are also good cheaper options but imo these are the best and i have cast alot of different lines.
Good luck if I can help drop me a pm any time

thanks for the ideas folks, should have said most of my fishing is the middle strech of the south esk so casting huge distances isn`t really an issue.

i liked the mach 2 line and it seemed to work well enough with the greyflex. I would certainly class my self as an occasional salmon fisher and I`m only getting a new line after someone nicked my reel so thats why I was looking at a full line.

The last time I had a proper read of a fishing mag god hadn`t started shaving and `tinternet was a thing for people down south so the skandi Vs skagit thing is a bit beyond me.

That said I`ve now started looking into it and may well try one out in the future.

Thanks for the imput folks JD
