Default Getting on down....

I am slightly confused by the various gizmos being marketed. To get my fly down I seem to have the option of

1. Putting lead on the fly (cost 2p)

2. Putting shot on the tippet (cost 1p)

3. Using a polyleader (cost say £4 per unit, or £16 for three - slow, medium, fast)

4. Using a multitip arrangement - (cost £100+)

Which do you learned gentlemen suggest is best, pros/cons etc, for medium sized rivers?

Forget the 1st 2.Polyleaders are a good starting point.using a aluminium/brass tube in colder water is an option, but the brass is not for the feint hearted.some tubes have coneheads to add a bit of weight.

Gizmos.

I know a chap who fishes in a motorcycle helmet if using brass tubes in a stiff wind.. he looks a pillock but you really wouldn't want a 2 inch cascade tube hitting you at 400mph.

I don't need a motorcycle helmet to look a pillock when fishing, it just comes naturally!

By gizmos I meant the polyleader sets and multitip sets, then of course there's the shooting head sets, skagit lines, spey lines, et al

Thanks for the help, I'll go for a polyleader set just to give me some alternatives as all I have at the moment is a floating line. For three days a year, which is all I can manage for salmon, its not worth doing anything else I suppose.

I have changed my modus operandi regarding depth tactics, I now use a floating line almost exclusively and use tube lfies tied on tungsten tubes, they sink like a stone!!!!
