Default salmon virgin - worming

Hi guys,

Im off fishing this weekend providing we get some rain and the river rises.

Anyway, Im thinking of worming as it allowed on this particular stretch.

Can anyone tell me whats the best way to do this and what the setup should be??

I have a trotting rod and cetrepin reel, will this be man enough for salmon? what lb line would you recommend to put on it??

thanx in advance

I would say in general a trotting rod would be far to lightweigh/soft for salmon. Personally I used to use a carp rod for worming as it was nice and long, sensitive in the tip and had a lot of backbone.

Keep the setup simple with rolling bullet/bouncing betty or similar and let the worms bounce down and across on the bottom. Getting the weight right is crucial as you need enough weight to cast and get the worms down, but light enough to allow the worms to drift down as naturally as possible. Hope that makes sense.

I would use braided line for the main line and 15lb mono hook link.

Worming is aloud on the river Alness but you need to use a centre pin so not so daft a question.
I would use a fixed spool spinning reel with braid, 3 way swivel and a 2 foot dropper.
Now you can use bouncing betties etc on the third droppper from the swivel but i sometimes use a standard large swivel with a couple of split shot.
the weight of the split shot, swivel and worms is usualy enough depending on the size of the river.

Tight lines.

I have been known to use blu-tack pinched onto the line. It can be adjusted very easily depending on the pool you are fishing etc...

like the guy said fixed spool and bouncing betty or if the water has a slow moving current i use a worm controler with a sliding float with the stop knot deeper than the river so the float drags the worm along behind it a proven killer on the river moy here in ireland.
