Default Oban area salmon river ?

I am going up to Oban again at the end of August begining of Sept. The estate I stay on has loch fishing and a nice little spate river that holds sea trout and the odd salmon , water levels permitting. However would love a day spent on a bigger river with the double handed fly rod. Say within an hours drive of Oban. Any suggestions / ideas from you guys? . Last year I asked in the Oban tackle dealer and didnt get anywhere...The local Angling club sells loch tickets but not river ....

Look on this web site Andy.
Has contact details and permit prices for all the accessable fishing in area.
Granted some might be more than an hour!
river Awe is probably your best bet, but you need to book in advance.

Oban, Mull and Lorn

Hope you enjoy your stay in gods actual country!

Hi Andy,
Most of our rivers are true spate rivers small and relying on rain ! Which is why Loch fishing is so popular ...Hard to find a water where you can wield a double handed rod...

AWE and Orchy both can be fished with double hander...

Awe can cost low season from £10-£35 and then from £300-£500.
I presume you after salmon ?
The River Orchy probably the next river of note...

Before the building of the barrage on the River Awe, salmon would be expected in the Orchy by March or April but the early running salmon are now held up below the barrage and don’t now reach the Orchy in any numbers until late May. The first runs of fish tend to run up as far as the Iron Bridge Falls and will stay there until the first summer spates in June, which spurs them on towards the upper river. The best fishing months on the Orchy are July to September, with mainly coloured fish caught in October. For information about fishing on the Orchy, contact Croggan Crafts, Dalmally, Argyll.

Hi,

I fish the Orchy every so often (took my first salmon from there and 4 in 2 days last year). When it's right it's great. But that tends to only be the next day after a spate, it doesn't stay in condition for long.

Better angler's than me will be able to temp the residents when it's not in top condition no doubt.

I get my permits from Loch Awe Stores. This site is quite good for a summary....

River Orchy Fishing Association

Another alternative might be the Lochy up at Fort William. May be a bit more than an hour away but holds it's condition for longer being loch fed.

If you don't go expecting to catch great numbers and drink in the surroundings and take any fish as a bonus you'll love it. Good luck.
