Default Salmon Lines

Have recently aquired a 15 ft #11/12 salmon rod, and have had a experienced caster try it out. His comments were "its a powerful rod and good caster" I have been looking at which line to get and decided Multi Tip is the way to go as it saves me having to buy extra spare reel spools and different lines.

Montieth and Mackenzie have reached the top of my wishlist as they both seem to get good reviews so I think it will be one of these makes I choose. I have a question that perhaps some of you experienced salmon anglers can answer.

now this may sound a bit of a thick question but hey I'm getting older and never done salmon fishing :-)

Bearing in mind the 15 ft rod is a #11/12, I see a lot of lines are rated #10/11 will this still be ok for a rod rated #11/12.

Nope.
If rod is rated 11/12, then line needs to be same to get best from it.
Any line rated 10/11 will not load rod properly unless full head weight is out, and even then is just on bottom end of rod rating.
Given that you are new to said level of fly fishing, is unlikely you could get full head/belly of 10/11 out to work rod.
Mebbes down size your line expectation, and get a Lee wulff floater or Michael Evans arrowhead #11/12, and add on airflo sinking leaders as required, for depth.
Will mean you can cast said brute without having to put out all of the line.
By the way what is the rod? 11/12 is VERY unusual!
This info will help us give you a good line choice!
regards
bert

Sounds like a rod designed for lifting sunk lines.

B&W possibly? Hexagraph?

Perhaps back to my original choice of the #11/12 snowbee 2D multi tip.

I have snowbee lines for my trout rod and I'm really happy with their performance, hopefully the Snowbee 2D multi tip can keep me happy too. I suppose I won't know until I try.

I don't think it will. It would help to know what the rod was, Mr 'expert caster' obviously saw what make it was before pronouncing: "Its a powerful rod and good caster"! If it's US made I wouldn't underline it with an UK line.

I once had a Rio Windcutter Multi-tip Spey 10/11/12 that would possibly suit, but it would still be underlined.

Not meaning he was a pro caster but certainly more experienced than me and was capable of casting it out a good distance.

The rod is a 15ft #11/12 Shimano Biocraft XTR.

That is the line i had in mind.
Still use one on my 15' 3"#10/11 Elite.
Is only line that really loads it well at shortish head out length.
Perhaps you should try to get one of them of e-bay reekie, or the accelerator version, rated 10/11/12, but you will need to put more out with accelerator version.
both come with required multi tips.

I'd welcome some help choosing a new floating line. My early (3-piece) Guideline LPXe throws a lovely floating line, overhead and spey, but isn't so happy spey-casting a heavy sinker & tube flies. I've recently also got a Loop Opti Spey (the one with the adjustable reel seat). It's a heavier more powerful rod. The Snowbee Spey 2 line that works well with the Guideline doesn't seem to load the Loop properly. The Loop loads well with Michael Evans intermediate and sinking lines. I suppose the obvious punt is either a Loop floater or a Michael Evans floater, but both would be a guess. Anyone able to offer any hands-on experience re a floater for spey-casting the Loop?

Many thanks if you can.
Alistair.

PS - should have added - my speycasting is adequate rather than expert!
