North American salmon regularly take dead drifted dries. Ours mostly don't unless they are skated. There is always an exception to any rule and the Black Pool on the Lledr had a reputation for salmon taken this way.

I think maybe its generally a 'fresh salmon in high clear water' technique.

Or maybe not! The small yellow dolly as fished on the Mallart (and possibly a few other rivers in the far north) is very much a low water tactic. Not true dry as it is generally skated.

I hooked a nice salmon on the itchen on a dry mayfly. the fish came up and head and tailed like a trout and it was only when he jumped that i could see what i really had!! sadly it was only a short fight as he soon came off, but i can still see that taketoday.

Red face Re: Salmon on a dry fly in uk

U'll neea catch a salmon on a dree flee. Well so they say.but i saw an absolute beauty head and tail on saturday night when waiting for dark for the sea trout. Apparantly few lads claim to have caught them on dry's. I just wish i could double my salmon count as i've only ever caught one. And that was 9lb on a medicine fly ( wet)

Excellent thread going on in the SpeyPages, same topic:

Atlantic Salmon on Dry Flies? - Spey Pages

Not too worried about posting a link to another forum as many here post there too; but a bit of transferable information?
