Default River Irvine

Hey i have posted a long time ago about salmon in the river irvine. I am going to fish this year for them but not sure where to go, and when they are in. i heard they are in just now but im not sure how reliable the information is. and any info on best spots is most appreciated.

the fish are there, albeit not in great numbers yet, the lower reaches are probably your best bet mate, Dreghorn and Irvine angling club waters

morph, i fished the river all the time up til 1990. the fish will be few and far between at the mo it is a back end river. the fish were mostly caught below the weir to the railway viaduct the low green was always a bit slow for my liking and i never had any salmon from there. i also liked the merrivale stretch although the locals were not always friendly. i must admit most of my fish came to spinners or minnows but had my biggest from the viaduct on the rugby club side on the fly. 18lb but that was in 1988. please let me know how you do. it was always blighted by poaching at low water. i hope this has changed. i did hear that the garnock had a good season last year. jon.

hugh, is it normal for the fish to be in at this time? or is it just that you have had the rain? i have always known the river to fish from late july onwards. please remember that this was 20 years ago. it would be interested to know if the main run of fish has got earlier. i keep promising myself a day out fishing every time i come home but in the past 20 years i have managed it once!! its good to hear that there are still fish being caught. do you still have the poaching problems. i remember watching them at leigh milton mill gaffing them as the came over the weir!!! that must have been 25 years ago. good luck, jon.
