Default single hand rod or double ?

Hi Guys

I recently posted asking for advice on single hand rods because I thought my dbl-hand rod was too much for a smaller river I have just started fishing. However, now I have another question. I have been checking out various possibilities and have found single handed 13' rods with a line weight of 8/10.

Now.... my current B&W dbl-hand rod is a 13' #8/10 so..... what is the difference between a single hand rod and a dbl-hand rod with the same length and line weight ????

Single hand in a long length like 13 ft would be heavy to cast all day- overhead or single handed spey casting.

Double handed rods in the same length enable you to spey cast double handed easily for a full day without much effort and can cast further too

Okay, I get that. So if I was going for a single hand I should really be looking at a shorter length?

Unless you are Popeye, I would avoid that one.

9ft 6 7/8, or 10ft 7/8 should be easily handled.

An 11ft 8 or 9 switch rod might be worth a look too.

If you see S/H 8-10 against a 13ft rod I'm am sure it will mean "shooting head". I'm sure it is a double handed rod

A 13ft 8-10 single handed rod would be too difficult at least 99% of the population to use. Exceptions would be discus throwers, international rugby forwards, heavyweight rowers, power lifters and rock climbers. They probably don't make rods for that particular niche.

Thanks guys.

I've seen a Daiwa Lochmoor-x 10' #8 and a Daiwa Lochmoor-z 10' #8... does anyone know the difference between the 'x' and the 'z' as the prices are quite different?

I have a couple of Lochmor X's they are surprisingly good rods, fairly fast action but mine are 12'6" aftm 8 double handers.
I'm struggling to imagine a river where that lovely little B&W 13' will be too much rod. Less tiring to use, better water command, easier to spey and roll cast .....

When my father retired from Lord Aberdeen's estate in Aberdeenshire, he was given a rod built to his own specification - a 3 piece 12' dbl hand on a Fibatube blank, built by Somers of Aberdeen, which he used for many years on the river Ythan in Aberdeenshire - a small water, rarely needing anything like the line that rod could cast, but the rod gave him much better line control, was brilliant for Spey casting, very light and although seeming to be soft and through-actioned, it killed fish pretty quickly and effectively. Unfortunately the rod was stolen when my car was broken into some years back, and I've never found anything comparable since. I used that rod for a few years on the Aberdeenshire Dee near Aberdeen, and on the Don ( both pretty big rivers in places) and found it incomparable. I would suggest that if you really want a lightweight (7 - 8 weight) salmon/grilse rod, then hunt down or have made something like this.

I use a diawa 11ft 3in, 8wt singlehander, great line control, used with a sink tip, shortish leader(6-7ft) and very heavy "nymphs", all short range, roll, spey casting, copes well, but am considering a switch rod, 10ft 6in, 8/9wt, for a bit more control on hooked fish, the diawa is just a tad soft and the butt extension is too short by 3-4inches, landed a couple of nice fish without to much bother, but maybe just a bit undergunned for speedy C&R!!!
