Default Taking a rod right back to the blank ??

How can I remove the "paint ?? " from a blank ?? I have an old rod I want to strip down and re new . One of the eyes was broken so thought I might as well do the whole rod as I not use it much anyway .
When I took the broken eye off , under where it was it is bare blank . This got me thinking , when I do the rod I would like the finish just plain grey with like a matt varnish .
Also how can I get the reel seat off ?? I assume it has been stuck on with epoxy ??

Cheers for any help/relies

Fine wet n' dry to take varnish off rod, easy does it....Take the butt cap of first or fighting butt if rod has one. Immerse the cap or butt in boiling water...this should soften the epoxy and with a bit luck you should be able to twist it off (gordon grips will help). You can then have a look inside the reel seat and see how much distance between it and the blank you have. It will probably be packed out. You could now start cutting up the seat length with a juinior hacksaw prising it open as you go. If you have a pipe slice you could do a bit at a time. Its all just common sense really and a wee challenge for you...destroy the seat maintain the blank! Next its a sharp blade and rough file to remove the epoxy and/ or packing material again avoiding damage to the blank.

Try a low toxicity paint stripper like 3M safestrip. Or scrape off the finish with a sharp blade at right angles, gently, then fine wet sand

Cheers for the replies . I not sure about paint strippers as thought it might do some damage to the resins in the blank ???

No - I specified low toxicity. But it won't remove the ususal 2-part epoxy paint finish on modern rods, thats a scrape/sand job

Ok cool , cheers .

It is a new rod so I think it sounds like a scape and sand job , might be more aggravation than it's worth ...

Its not so daunting, just take it carefully. You could also strip off hardware, and key and smooth the blank then repaint - halfords car spraypaint does the trick, finish with 2 coats of rod varnish. But there will be extra build up and marginal weight gain that might dampen/slow rod action slightly

I don't want to repaint it as want the natural colour of the blank , just going to varnish it .

Thanks for your help
