Default Build my own 7'-8' dry fly rod-advice please

As above I've decided to build one. Do I need a fast taper? I think so as fishing will generally be at short range. Which supplier?

Is it really as complicated as some posts suggest? Do you really need all the stuff mentioned-long lists I've seen.

I built a rod once before (1974) to be exact. Soft action Tench rod on a Terry Eustace 10' glass blank. It all seemed relatively straight forward really.
Still got and use the rod and it still looks like the day I finished it.

Anyway what I really need to know is fast action? From who. My basic criteria is: very slim, very light and quick to load.

So where do I go from here? Nearly forgot-small rivers are it's destination.

Any thoughts most welcome.

Erm...no, thought I'd go for the easier option . I have a nice bamboo rod, had it for 25+ yrs nothing fancy Sealey Octopus 7'6-8' two tops. It's minty and I caught sea trout in Connemarra and lots of fiesty brownies with that rod.

Mmm...you got me thinking now boss...

Hi Christy

Received your PM

If you’re after Bamboo
I would need to know a little more information first
Like line weight. Distance cast. Is the rod for dry fly?

Regarding blanks I don’t sell blanks anymore got to busy with the rod building side

But I can recommend Chapman’s
Tell them I sent you.
Really nice guys
Highly Recommended

Double that recomendation if you want bamboo. They are real craftsmen and gentlemen.. Also Gary is great for advice - both himself and John Chapman made a boo build possible for me to do. It's also not hard, you just need to know how to whip, and there are no special tool's needed. finished mine with a bobin holder, razor blade and varnish..... No different than finishing your previous one
For carbon, contact David N, he will be able to advise you more than admirably.

Most of all - enjoy building it and then getting to fish something you had your hand in producing.

Merv

If still not persuaded about splitcane - have a look at what Harrison's have - they are the best in carbon - and British ! As is David Norwich !

Best wishes

My first thought is that the last thing you need is a fast taper for close quarters river fishing.

Noted dry fly rods like JJH Triumph, CC de France and Wallop Brook were all made middle to butt, "through", or parabolic. I should know, I've fished all these rods over the last couple of days.
Fast tapers and graphite are good at distance work, and some graphites are good close.

People fish cane and silk lines for that special feeling you often don't get from a plastic rod.

Building the rod isn't "just like the rod you built" unless that included metal ferrules which need to be lapped in and fitted. Not much margin for error there.

Good luck.
