Mrtrout is a jewel in the roughMrtrout is a jewel in the rough
Default Dropped a bollox, advice needed, please.

Last year I bought a very nice looking little 6ft 3 piece rod carbon from a chap on here.
I didn't pay a lot for it, thank heavens, and used it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and christened it very quickly.
I thought to myself that the cork was a little too thick for my liking so today I tried to sand it down a bit.
I have done this before with great success, but what I didn't realise with this handle is, the cork is actually a veneer laid over a composite and glued on.!!!
It looked for all the world like cork rings, as it was cut from a sheet.
Obviously I have sanded right through the cork and with it only being perhaps a millimetere or so thick, it has ruined it before I realised.
How difficult would it be to have the handle replaced with proper cork?
Is this a big job/expensive, I know nothing of rod builing etc, so I am in the lap of the Gods.
As I say I didn't pay much for the rod, but it looks awful now, and seems a shame to waste it, any advice much appreciated.
Thanks Steven.

Hi Steven, any reasonable rodbuilder should be able to put a handle on for not a huge amount of money.

Take all the cork off and turn the rod handle to the size you would like. Next
glue sheet cork over the handle its just like veneering mate. When you cut the joint cut right though both layers of cork and wrap tight with strong cord.
Sand the cork to remove any marks put in there by the tight cord.

Thanks Gary, I was hoping you would see my plight.
Two questions, is the sheet cork easily available, and what's the best glue to use, and a third, does the sheet cork come in various thicknesses, to allow you to sand out the cord marks, as this stuff was very thin.
Thanks S.

You can sometimes get hold of it in Art shops comes on a roll and is used by model makers.
The trade get it from Siesta Cork Tiles
But you have to buy a hell of a lot of it so try the first one (Art Shop)

Regarding glue = Cascamite
Cascamite on Wokingham Tools

Some of the old cork sheet was very thin. So buy the replacement first and allow for thickness.
